DS has started making different noises when he cries/gets excited/and so on. For instance, when he used to cry it would be a "waaah waah" now sometimes it's "maaah maaah." But I'm not delusional, it's not "Mama" - it's babble.

That's awesome! I can't wait to hear mama, even if she doesn't mean it. The other day she blurted out what sounded like my dog's name. The dog thought so too bc she came running over and A got a big sloppy kiss!
It's pretty common around this age for babies to start repeating sounds over and over, like mamamama, or bababa. They don't start associating it with people or things until 9 or 10 months.
I know even if he is 'saying' it he doesn't know what it means or anything. He was repeating 'boo' when daddy would say it around three months old, but he sure didn't know it meant anything. There was one night though that he was quiet and looked right at me and said mama without any babbling, but he probably didn't know what he meant.
In the midst of baby babble he has said mama, daaadaaa, uh-oh, and mom. I know its not intentional and purely coincidence but I still love hearing him say mama. LOL
Sorry, but I side-eye anyone who thinks their 3-6 month old can talk. In my book, it only counts as talking if there is a DEFINITE connection to the object, and it is repeated. Sure, DS maybe said MAMAMAMAMAMAMA when he was probably 6 months old, but he didn't mean "Mama" and didn't point to me when he said it. But this reminds me of a friend who swears her baby was speaking Spanish when she was like 5 months old. I thought she was kidding.
Babies do not say their first words at 6 months... they babble and make sounds which may make you "think" they are saying words. Um nope, not words! Sorry.
edit to add,
Olivia was a very early talker. She was grouping words together by a year and we were having conversations at 18 months. But, she still wasn't saying words at a few months old.

Agreed - my 9-month niece calls everything mama. Her mom, me, her lovey, food, clothes, etc. My sister says that it's because they made such a big deal the first few time she said it. It's literally the only thing she says not because she's thinking of her mom, but because she gets rewarded when she says it.

I was an early talker. My first word was me. My Gran loves to tell anyone who will listen about it. She says we were playing and she said " Who is making that noise?" and I said "Me." I was almost 8 months old.
But there is no way he is talking at 5 or 6 months. Ds says dada all the time but it is babble.
Re: Any one have first words yet?
Just babbling...
Not sure if your really serious...
