Taking off time for appts

Anyone else feel like you're taking off a lot of time?  So far, I've taken 3 half days to make afternoon appointments, and I will have a 4th one the day we get back from spring break and a 5th one the week after that!  I'm planning on telling work the day after the next appointment, but I can tell that my coworkers are either getting wise or getting annoyed with me.  Since these appointments are always in the afternoon, I also feel like my last two classes for the day are going down the tubes since they always get stuck with a sub.

I make sure I'm using leave time every time I go so no one has to cover my class, but I wish I could save it for when LO is finally here.  We are allowed to use our sick leave before FMLA kicks in, so you can get paid for as much as you have available.

 Ugh, just needed to vent.

  • Definitely lots of appointments and lots of time, but luckily I'm in a position that I can come in 2hrs earlier and leave early for those appts.

Ohhhh no!  There's enough of that going around with teachers who are getting their positions cut this year!  I love my job and I sing it from the rooftops!

A pregnancy rumor already started with me the first day I got morning sickness.  I didn't even know I was pregnant then, and I sorta flew off the handle when the women I work with confronted me about it.  Apparently, I was wearing a trapeze shirt the day before and then I had to leave work to barf so they figured I was hiding a pregnancy that I didn't even know I had, lol.  Still trying to think of a cute way to tell them in 2 weeks.

  • No, I feel the same way.  I feel bad every time I e-mail my principal asking for half a sick day to go to an appointment.  She seems to understand...it's just me.  Some of my students are actually starting to figure there's something going on and when they go home and tell their parents, the parents are starting to figure it out.  I told a mom that I was pregnant because we were going on a field trip and doing a lot of walking and she was like, "Yeah, I kind of figured since you were taking off so much."  I can't say I would have ever suspected that just because someone had a few half days off!  At least they don't think I am dying! Well... you've got two excellent choices :)

Wear the same trapeze shirt and carry around a pack of saltines in one hand and a water bottle in the other... should make for a fun day.

Call a big meeting like you are going to give your 2 weeks... start off telling everyone how much you've loved working there (leaning them towards believing you are leaving) then turn the page and tell them how excited you now are to share this new chapter of your life with everyone... yadda yadda

Love love LOVE your first suggestion!  That's so my style, too!  I might do that, thanks!

  • Yeah it is a lot of time off.  You aren't the only one.  I just took another hour and a half today. I've got an appointment next week where I have to leave early and then two appointments the following week.  I try to get the latest appointment possible but it's hard. My hours are 8 to 4.  I was hoping to save a lot of time during the pregnancy so I could take more time off when LO arrives!

  • I guess that's one benefit of having to wait until 12 weeks for my first appointment. Haven't had to use any of my PTO yet.  :-)
  • Everyone I work with already knows, but I do feel bad about taking the time off, especially since I want to save as much of it for when LO arrives since I want to take a week vacation before my maternity leave starts.

I've only been to one appointment so far, but I have another one and I'm taking whole days for the last and next one. After that I'll probably start taking half days, and I work at a place where I can make the time up luckily. Anytime they plan on taking blood though I make sure to take a whole day so I can go home and sleep it off lol

  • I completely feel the same way.  I am a teacher, too, and have ALWAYS been very devoted to my job, so missing this time hasn't been easy for me.  I hate that I feel like I leave my students hanging.  What really stinks is that my school won't do substitutes for partial days off.  But, I do have the sick leave and feel like I have to take care of myself (even if that means an appointment with a nurse educator, a sick visit to my pcp, and an "emergency" ultrasound appointment all within a week and a half or so).  I rarely take time off and I try very hard to schedule things in a way to least impact my colleagues.  That's all I can do...you're doing what you have to do.

THIS! I'm so bad with needles...I think I'm gonna be a wreck, and wouldn't dare go into work after that. So far, I've taken one day for an appointment, but DH has also had some health things lately and I've had to take time off to take him to appointments (the joys of sharing a car!) PLUS I had a nasty cold for like 2 1/2 weeks and had to take a few days off for that...I feel like it's getting suspicious! Luckily, my boss is going to be on vacation the week before I plan to tell him about the LO, so that's a week without feeling like he's catching on...

  • Fortunately I've been able to schedule all my appointments for after school hours (we get out wicked early, 2:15, and my contract allows me to leave when the kids leave, so I can make 3:00 appointments).  I had to take one day off for my intake appointment because the only one they had available was at 10am.

I do wonder though what people are expected to do who work 9 to 5.  Not every job allows you to just leave whenever you feel like, and I'm fortunate I guess that I can usually get something in the late afternoon, but seriously. More docs need to start having evening or weekend hours!

  • I was starting to feel bad until today. I went in to tell my boss that I had an appointment on Friday and again on Monday and he stopped me in the middle of it and said that he realizes I'm going to have a ton of appointments and I don't even have to let him know when they are. He is very supportive (he has two young kids so he's been through this recently) and it makes me feel much better when I have to leave early or take a long lunch.
