From stick straight hair to curly....I need help.

I used to have stick straight hair, but pregnancy, etc has created a monster on my head.   I now have wavy hair and it's driving me nuts.   I have no idea how to do my hair.  I got my hairdresser to cut my hair the other day so that if I don't 'do' my hair and it dries naturally it looks half-decent.      She did a good cut.   My hair is now shoulder length, but has short layers.

My problem:  I can't straighten it nicely because of the short layers, so when I 'do' my hair, it's got to be the curly/wavey way.

So - How do I do my hair now!!!   I'm not used to this.  I'm having an identity crisis, lol!      What products work well to hold the wave so it doesn't go all wonky and frizzy?

Re: From stick straight hair to curly....I need help.

  • I have had curly hair all my life...I use 4 different products on my hair... but I have thick hair down to the middle of my back.  I use Garnier Fructis products (because I use so much and they are cheap but smell nice)  I use the frizz cream right after I get out of the shower to tame the little frizzes... and then I use a little bit of gel... then a bunch of mousse (I use a flexible hold so it is not crunchy) and finish with a bit of hair spray.   I style when mine is still damp then finger comb the ringlets after they dry.  If I had a picture I would attach...but I am at work.  The Herbal Essense mousse also works well.  I also use the Curls Rock shampoo and conditioner, and once a week I use a dandruff shampoo to deep clean and get out all of the product residue.    Hope this helps... I use a lot less product when my hair is short... so you might have to play with the amounts.  Good luck !!

  • Thanks so much!    My hair is super fine.   None of my sisters can help me because they all have straight hair as well.   I just can't believe how wavy my hair has gotten in the past year.   It's kind of like a culture shock.
  • No problem... my whole family has curly hair... so we have had our lifetimes to figure out how to make it work.  If you have fine hair you might have to apply product and scrunch it in a little more than I do...and make sure to only comb through your hair once after showering... then immediately apply product and scrunch... let the curls dry naturally.  The more I comb or brush... the more frizz and my hair gets more poofy.

  • Thanks again!   I've switched to finger combing my hair after I shower because if I comb it, it looks straight but then dries up into a funky wave......
  • You can still straighten it out.  Just get a high end straightener and go slow.  As you reach the end of the layer just kind of turn the straightener under with your wrist and keep going allt he way down.  It'll create a smoother gradual layered look.
  • I use Patine Curly Hair shampoo/conditioner. Then use John Frieda leave in conditioner that I comb through my wet hair. I then use John Frieda mousse and scrunch it up. Never brush or comb when dry. Also my stylist will straighten my hair then cut it dry and straight because it becomes uneven when cut curly & wet. Just a tip that has made a huge difference with my hair.
