Two Under 2

When did you start going out again after #2?

Realistically, when did you start getting out and about to your activities when you had #2?

I'm trying to think of fun things to do this summer for my older one (he will be almost 2) but I'm not sure how realistic some things are with a newborn in tow. We are thinking things like the zoo, parks with playgroup, library storytime.

Re: When did you start going out again after #2?

  • I'd say we were back to regularly scheduled outings 6 weeks post baby (that's when I actually felt up to going out again).  To me babies are pretty portable, either in a stroller or baby wearing, newborns sleep a lot so as long as I prepared to be out for the day I didn't find it that hard.

  • 3 weeks PP is when I felt good enough to start getting out and about (I had a c-section).

I do all of those things with a baby in tow. We walk to the playground everyday, and we have a zoo membership so we go a ton. I wear LO in the carrier a lot, or we bring a double stroller. THe only challenging one is bringing them both to story time since I have to pay a lot of attention to DD to make sure she's safe from the older kids since I bring her playmat for her so I cant tend to DS too much. However, other moms there have grabbed his hand before he ran out the door. :)

  • We were back to all our regular activities by the time DD2 was 3 weeks old. I can't stand being stuck indoors and DD1 is a super busy/active/energetic child. We went back to all our regular playgroups, gymboree, library story times, etc..and DD2 just stayed in the carrier and slept through most of it at that age :)

  • it's tricky by yourself, but wearing the baby is a big help and makes parks and story times doable.   whenever you feel physically up for it- I found that when I didn't have a plan I could actually get out of the house easier... how weird is that?!  My youngest is a Feb baby, so we weren't doing too many outdoor things for a few months...
  • A few weeks, I think.  DS was born in mid-August so we weren't in the middle of a cold season or anything, and I felt really great with my recovery.  I wanted to get used to taking them both outside and out and about, since DD gets a bit of cabin fever if we're home day after day after day.  I haven't really had any issues, I just make sure to park by cart returns.

  • A couple weeks...as soon as I was feeling better from c/s. it was the middle of all the fall festivities and we didn't want DD#1 to miss out.

There was also a bit of dividing up the kids. DH would take older one to go do things while I was home with baby and vice versa.

  • My situation was a bit different because I had some labor complications and was bedridden for a week after DD2's birth.  My mobility was limited for about a month after that, as well.  I also had family around to help until DD2 was about seven weeks old, so I didn't start going out by myself with the two of them until then.  She is six months old now, and honestly, it was easier to go out when she was two months old becuase she slept a lot more.  I could just strap her on, or leave her in the double stroller, and spend most of the time entertaining DD1.  Now it's a little more difficult.  We take walks outside a few times a week, and go to playgrounds or cafes (we live in a city).  Recently we went to an art gallery with another mom and her toddler.  It was nearly deserted because it was a weekday, and DD1 had a blast just running around.  DD2 did pretty well in the stroller, but she did get fussy.

  • Immediately.  It helped so much to get out and about.  I just wore DS when I needed to, otherwise, he went in the stroller and we let DD run.
