Those little one step stools for kids are obviously way too short. Even one of our kitchen chairs is too short. Ds is getting too heavy for me to hold him while he washes his hands and I still have to have a hand free to get him some soap. Do you just use a larger several step step stool (like from Home Depot)? Or something else?

A friend has this and it works pretty well: https://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/90149191
We have this and it's OK, but not great (too tall to easily get on, not *quite* tall enough to reach the faucet, etc): https://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/80159519

i would rest DS on my knee or put him on the counter. it's an awkward age (just like the spelling of that word....)
how about hte tub? can he reach the stream of water to wash?
We have a variety of stools but the best one is that white IKEA one. DD and DS have no trouble getting onto it and they can move it around to where its needed. Plus its tall enough for her to reach, I guess it depends on how tall your kid is and how tall your counter tops are.
I remember doing this when my boys were smaller. Now they just use a regular step stool.

This. That's with Mady. With Declan, since his arms are so short (and he's usually barefoot) I'll sit him on the sink counter and do it that way (this is in the bathroom). In the kitchen I just lean him over. He likes the bathroom experience better, big surprise
Could you use the Ikea two step wood step stool (like $15 I think). They're really sturdy and about knee high. We have one in the kitchen and ds uses it to wash his hands at the kitchen sink no problem.
