Cloth Diapering

diapers seem so big on my newborn

I had my baby on Saturday :)

Our plan was to start cloth diapers once we got home from the hospital.  So far I've got newborn sized prefolds with some lovelybums fleece covers and they seem way too big on him.  I'm a bit worried about snagging the cord stump on the diaper.  I know they are going to be bigger than disposables but it just seemed so uncomfortable for him.

Does anyone have any suggestions? Any hints on keeping the diaper off the cord stump? less bulky covers? Thanks!

Re: diapers seem so big on my newborn

  • Congrats!

They're going to look huge for a little while until he gets a little bigger.

I never did anything special with the cord stump. DD wore prefolds and Thirsties covers, and onesies, and it never bothered her.

  • It's amazing but very soon those "huge" PFs are going to seem tiny. DD outgrew her NB stash very quickly and I was shocked with the FBs that seemed so massive that she'd never wear them fit her.

I never did anything special for the cord either. Her's fell off without issue within a week and a half.

  • Yeah PFs irritated DDs cord area & made it bleed so we stopped using those & used KLOs until it was well healed.  KLOs have a snap down thing for the cord area.  Bummis super brite covers were best IMO for NB phase.  Even though I didn't have a small NB (she was 8lb3pz) Thirsties covers seemed gigantic.

  • Yeah, I think all diapers (even newborn ones) look big on newborn babies. :) In the beginning, I had to buy her pants a size larger than her tops, lol.

Honestly, I used disposables for the first few weeks for the reason you mentioned: the cloth diaper kept catching on the cord stump. We even had special covers with a notch in them for the cord, but it just didn't work for us.

  • Congratulations!

We used pfs and covers when DS was a newborn.  You can fold the front of the PF down a little - it makes it even bulkier, but the front is where most of the pee for a boy winds up anyway.  DS was 6lbs7oz at birth, and the newborn prefolds came down to his knees Indifferent  PP were right, though, they really do grow fast and now those prefolds don't even look large enough to use as inserts.

I found that the cover I used seemed to make a bigger difference than the actual prefold.  We had one Bummis super bright, some Thirsties xs diaper covers, and a Mommy's Touch nb.  The Bummis super bright and the Mommy's Touch seemed to work better around the cord stump, though I seem to recall also sagging the diaper a little a la teenagers and their low-slung pants.  The Mommy's Touch snaps down in front, which made it fit a little better, and the Bummis is just lower cut.  Once his cord fell off, I actually liked the Thirsties better (they have gussets, which helped with nb poop), but before then those two covers worked well for us.

  • LO would scream when we'd put the prefolds and covers on her as a newborn-she was obviously uncomfortable. We did sposies for the first couple of weeks and by then the prefolds were better and her OS dipes were also fitting her.
