Pregnant after IF

Success with only 2 follies? (IVF)

Hoping for a few success stories over here. Any input would be appreciated!

Had my day 5 ultrasound today and was told i have 1 12 follie and 1 10. I do have two others but they are measuring around 6. Granted I only have one ovary but come on!! The nurse seemed unsure whether or not the cycle would be canceled.

Can't my body do ANYTHING right???

Re: Success with only 2 follies? (IVF)

  • I didn't do IVF but my successful IUI cycle only had 1 mature follicle.  We didn't think we had a chance in h*ll of it working but it did.

Is your day 5 ultrasound CD 5?  If so I wouldn't worry yet.  I had follicles show up like day 8 or 9 that ended up being mature enough to trigger.  The littler ones will probably catch up.

  • Is there any reason why you can't do an IUI instead?  I had 1-2 follies with each IUI and our successful cycle was with just one follie.  I don't see anything in your sig about MFI so I'm curious why you have to do IVF.  I see you only have one ovary, but obviously it's responding and if you triggered you'd release all mature eggs from your one ovary anyway.

  • You will probably end up having more than 2. I can't remember my exact numbers, but I think I started off my cycle (which resulted in this pregnancy) with 5 and ended up with 10 eggs retrieved. The smaller ones will catch up. If not, can they convert you to IUI? If you have 4 or less I would probably consider that, especially given the cost and invasiveness of IVF...

  • I think you have at least 4 in the running.  My RE didn't measure smaller ones early on during the stimming process.  There may be others that will catch up.  And sometimes they will let the lead follicle go in order to let the smaller ones catch up.

Do you know what your AFC was before you started stimming?

Also, some REs have a minimum of follicles needed for ER.  Mine did not.  With my 1st IVF, I only had 2 measurable right before I triggered.  We ended up with 4 after my ER.  Apparently I have some that hide.  Each time!

If you do end up continuing this cycle with ER, there are ladies that have had few eggs and success.

    Good luck!

  • Good news, both follies are growing at the same rate.

I did most of my IVF with 2-4 follies, although they didn't work out, I don't think it had anything to do with the number, but the quality of my follies.

A few questions: 1) what is your FSH?  2) AMH if it was tested?  3) How much/many/type stim meds were you on?

I'm a poor responder, so I can TOTALLY relate with your concerns.  I have both ovaries, so 2 could be AWESOME for you.

My story is a little weird, bc I started with IVF due to DH previous vasectomy.  Did the 3 covered cycles (cancelled cycles didn't count) of IVF with ICSI before getting his vasectomy reversed.  Vas Rev didn't work, azoospermia after 1 year (still no sperm to be honest).  Then on to IUI with donor sperm.

I was an egg donor before my own IVF struggles, they told me then that I needed to do my IVF before I ran out of options.  Hard pill to swallow that my IVF donor cycle produced 7 mature follies and none of my own IVF cycles performed that well (only 6 months later).  RE said that everyone has a diff fertility curve, mine peaked at 27!!!

Anyone, I digress.....I moved on to IUI and still needed 450 units of Follistim daily and Femara (5 mg daily for the first few cycle days).  IUI #1 no good with 1 good follie.  REST on DHEA for 4 months.  IUI #2, I made 4 good follies on the same protocol.  I'm now pregnant!!!

Just want to say not to lose hope......infertility is a crazy roller coaster ride at times.

If you have any specific questions, feel free to ask.

Trying to conceive #2 since May 2006.
