Insurance Rant...any advice??

Sorry in advance for this rant but I am REALLY sick of insurance companies!! My husband and I decided we are ready to start TTC soon and we're working on getting everything in order (I'm a Type A "planner"). I just found out the insurance I have now has NO maternity coverage so everything would be OOP which we just can't afford.

I could get back on my work insurance, but not until open enrollment on 1/1/12. My HR administrator told me that maternity benefits should kick in right away and that group plans cannot consider it a pre-existing condition (Anthem/BCBS) but then I read something about the plan on their website and it said there may be a 12 month waiting period. I'm so confused about what to do. Ideally, we'd like to have everything in place to really start TTC by the end of the year. If my insurance benefits won't kick in, are there any other options out there? Has anyone else had any problems with insurance? Sorry, I guess I just had to rant. It's frustrating knowing that we are ready to start a family once a few more things are in place but now it feels like our timeline is being dictated by insurance.

Re: Insurance Rant...any advice??

  • Wow...no maternity coverage stinks.  I'm sorry about that!  Dealing with insurance companies IS frustrating...vent away.

It's sometimes hard to interpret an insurance company's plan, and it sounds like your new company's plan for maternity coverage is ambiguous.  I would call their customer service and ask for the maternity benefits to be explained to you.  Maybe the 12-month waiting period is for something else...hopefully!

Timing wise, if you would indeed be covered on 1/1/12 and don't plan to start TTC until the end of the year, you should be fine.  Most OBs will schedule your first appointment anywhere from 8-10 weeks, so it sounds like you wouldn't have to sweat out the timing of it.

Good luck getting that figured out!  I hope it works out for you!

  • That seriously sucks - I didn't realize that some plans don't have maternity coverage. Are you paying for an independent plan now, or is this your husband's insurance? I agree that I would definitely call your work's insurance company and get the low-down straight from them on the maternity policy. I've always found that calling when I had insurance questions was much more helpful than asking HR or using the website, and then you won't second guess. Hope you can figure something out!

  • Yes, unfortunately I have no maternity coverage, even though my insurance is through a group plan. Last year, my parents found out with the new "Obamacare" I could get on their health insurance for no extra cost to them. They offered to help save my husband and I some money (it was too expensive for us to combine plans, oddly enough) and get on their plan. I just recently called them about the coverage and apparently there is some "loophole" in the coverage...they won't cover any maternity benefits for dependents but if my mom got pregnant, they would cover her. Go figure!

I'm going to call BCBS about our group plan through work to get it figured out, but it still means waiting until next year. It's just frustrating trying to figure out all the logistics of something that should just be simple.
