Turning 1, no sign of dropping nursing sessions/bottles. Help!

I'm totally fine with continuing to nurse O, but the boy shows no sign of wanting to drop any of his bottles (he only takes 2 during the day when I'm working). OMG I do NOT want to pump anymore. We've been giving him whole milk in a cup for the last month or so with meals. Maggie easily dropped her daytime feedings, this boy is another animal.

Any advice on what I should do here?

  • Can you give him whole milk in his bottles instead of pumping?? I still give DS a bottle of whole milk before bed.. And he's almost 20 months.. He can and does drink out of a sippee so meh.. Doesn't bother me that he still uses bottles. Its not like he walks around carrying them or the only way he takes milk. Can you do that?

  • Hmm, good idea, maybe we will give that a try once my frozen milk is gone.

  • we've moved to milk... but she will not give up the bottle.  I've tried everything, but she just wants the milk in the bottle.  She'll drink water or juice out of cups, but not her milk.
  • Could you just go cold turkey and only give him whole milk in a sippy cup and see how that goes for a few days?  That is what we were told to do to get Kate off bottles.  I caved, though, so that didn't work for us.

We were also told that we could put water in the bottle to try and turn her off from wanting to drink out of them.

I also like the idea of putting his milk in the bottle and quitting pumping.

  • I would try giving the whole milk in a bottle. A is still getting 2 bottles a day, but only at home before his nap and bedtime.

  • I have been dropping my pumping sessions in hopes to be finished soon.  I am currently giving a morning bottle with WM and BM mixed and a night time bottle with WM and BM mixed in.  Throughout the day he will take drinks from a sippy or straw cup of the WM/BM mixture.  Good luck!

  • We also did whole milk in the bottle.  He eventually dropped the bottle..

As long as your dh doesn't leave the bottle behind the rocking chair and you don't see it, I don't see a problem with it...Ick!

  • At 12 mo, F was still nursing 4x per day. We added in sippy cups of whole milk - but he took those in addition to his nursing sessions. At around 13 mo, I went away for a weekend so we had H drop the daytime feedings, he just gave him a bottle of BM when he woke up and went to sleep. He only asked to daytime nurse once or twice after I was back, and just drinks more whole milk during the day.

ETA: He made no indication that he was ready to drop those two daytime feedings, but did/does fine without them! He eats a lot more table food though, and started that right away.

  • Thanks everyone. I fixed two big bottles for him with bm/whole milk to take to my in-laws this morning, and Owen was screaming at them even though he'd just nursed. Stinker loves his bottle. :-)
