Breastfeeding

When did your milk come in?

I apologize because I know this has been asked a million times, but I can't seem to find an old thread on it now that I need it.

I had a CS after 45 hours of labor and 2.5 hours of pushing, last Wednesday.  DS had trouble latching the first two days, but I started pumping late Thursday night.  He has been latching well since Saturday and feeding often.  I have also continued to pump at least once a day, just in case we need to supplement again.  I'm now on day 6 and my milk is still MIA.  Also, DS is still having dark green BM; I'm assuming that is because he is still only getting colostrum.  I wouldn't be so concerned about my milk if it weren't for the trouble we had in the beginning and the large weight loss he's had as a result.

So...just curious when other's milk has come in and at what point I really need to worry.

Thanks.

Re: When did your milk come in?

  • I had DD late on a Tuesday night and my milk came in Saturday afternoon.  But it is different for everyone.  I'm not saying anything is wrong but I would see an LC.  At least put your mind at ease.

  • Mine took 5 days to come in.  Are you getting anything when you pump?  I would get in contact with a LC.

  • I had DS midnight on Thursday (so Wed night, technically). My milk came in on Monday.

Some women- it takes 7 days.

  • I had my DD on a Wednesday and my milk came in Friday/Saturday. They only reason I could tell is from DD's diaper output. I never got engorged or anything. You should definitely contact an LC if you are worried!

Also, I don't think the tar poop is the result of colostrom, but I could be wrong.

This.  The tar poop is normal and just needs to work out of baby's system.  I don't know how long it should take though.

  • I had my DS via planned c-section on a Friday morning, my milk came in on Tuesday. I never supplemented, but he was literally attached to my breast non stop. I think it helped a lot.

My first DS was an unplanned c-section after laboring for over 24 hours, my milk never really "came in". I wasn't really educated on how often I needed to put him to the breast though. In hind sight I know if I would have had the help of an LC I would've been successful.

If you are worried contact a lactation consultant. Try to rest, drink lots of water, and spend lots of time doing skin-to-skin contact with your DS.

Congrats on your sweet baby boy!

  • planned C-section on a Friday mid-day and milk came in on Sunday BUT DS wouldn't latch, but I pumped religiously every two hrs after tring to get him latched to bring in my milk.. My wonderful LC told me when talking about another gal that trauma and long labor resulting can cause delay in milk coming in.. stick with it and nurse or pump every two hrs.. it will come, just perservere and the results will be well worth it!
  • I had ZZ on Wednesday night and my milk came in on Sunday morning.

  • I had a CS after 60 hours of labor and 2.5 hours of pushing so our experiences seem similar.  I had DS on Tuesday, and my milk still hadn't come in when we left the hospital on Friday afternoon.  I believe that it was either Saturday or Sunday evening when it finally did.  DS lost close to 15% of his weight so we supplemented per pedi's instructions for a day or two, until he was back up to less then 10%.  I think that you shouldn't worry as long as your DS has the right number of wet/dirty diapers.  You might never even notice your milk coming in, since not everyone gets engorged or leaks (I didn't).  If you suspect that your milk still hasn't come in by Wednesday you might want to contact a LC just in case.  Good luck and enjoy your LO.

  • I also had a c-section. My milk came in day 5-6, but it didn't come in all at once like for some people, it came in slowly so I never felt engorged. Not everyone will feel the let down or engorgement. LO stools were dark for the first week or so, if I can recall correctly. I think that is normal. I agree, call a LC if you are concerned. The sooner you see one, the easier it will be to fix any issues if there are any and if not, she can at least give you peace of mind. Also, I had LO on the breast pretty much ever waking moment to bring in my milk.
