Re: s/o tomatoes - anyone plant from seeds?

  • I start with seedlings (seed savers exchange sells tomato and pepper seedlings now) but that's only because last year was my first year for any kind of a garden and I didn't want to overwhelm myself with having to start seedlings indoors. I will definitely plant from seeds in the future, hopefully next year I'll get the guts.

  • I have had my best lucking starting with plants on both tomatoes and peppers.

  • In the past I've usually started with plants for ease, but this year I ordered seeds from St Clare seeds since all the plants readily available are GMO it seems.  I'm going to start my seeds this week.

Since the seeds are cheap I figure if they don't work out I can always fall back to buying plants later if enough don't work out. But MIL's "friend" (who I gave half of all the seed packs too) started his seeds last week and he's has tons of little sprouts already so it's looking good.

  • I'm a bit lazy (and don't have a ton of sunny window space for plants inside) so I just buy plants from the farmer's market.

  • We plant from seeds. We start indoors early with gro lights in our garage (i wonder what our neighbors think we are up to...lol) and eventually the little babies end up on the back porch to used to the temperature before we plant them.

This is my theory as well - I have luck starting peppers and tomatoes; watermelon hasn't worked at all, cucumbers have been hit or miss

  • Oh and seed savers are all gmo free! I think their seedlings are 3 a piece but you  have to buy in quantities of 6 (any kind, mix and match) because they can only ship in 6's. I think shipping is maybe 7 bucks but I feel like that was a flat rate so if you get 12 it's the same shipping ...

Are you starting them all indoors first? Not all seeds should be started indoors (tomatoes and peppers should) but I'm pretty sure watermelon and I know cucumbers should be directly sown. They need the cold to germinate properly.

Tomatos, peppers, summer squash I'm starting inside...pumpkins/winter squash, onions, chard/spinach/greens all go straight outside (that's all I can think of right now).

  • DH starts them from seeds. We even grew some inside throughout the winter. (We can do that because the entire south side of the house is windows, so they get plenty of sun.)

He just planted the seeds for this summer's tomatoes a few days ago.

  • I start from plants for tomatoes and peppers, seed for everything else. Where I live it's too late now to start tomatoes from seed.

I tried directly sowing them last year, but no luck Stick out tongue I'm planning on directly sowing when I transfer the tomatoes and peppers in a week or 2.  I am by far someone with a green thumb, so the fact that I can get anything to grow indoors or out is a great accomplishment.
