My Halloween related pet-peeve

People who don't give out candy yet still take their own kids around the neighborhood with a goody bag annoy me.

We have friends who have always done this- always turned out their light, never once gave out treats because (1) they were super cheap and (2) they didn't celebrate Halloween due to their religious beliefs.

Still didn't prevent them from taking their own kids out, in costume, to all of the neighbors.

Cheapskates.

Re: My Halloween related pet-peeve

  • Wait... they don't celebrate Halloween, but take their kids trick or treating?

    I think they're just cheap.

I don't get it if it is against their religious beliefs?  Is that just an excuse?

  • we won't take our kids out for another couple of years yet- but I wonder how you hand out candy if you're trick or treating?

this year I am leaving out a bowl-if it goes it goes, but I am not dealing with a yappy weiner dog, a sniffly toddler and my own pregnantass every time someone knocks on my door-and it is usually uncostumed adults with target bags anyway! They can help themselves!  ( I know I sound bitter....last year kind of made me mad.)

  • I can understand the not handing out candy part-if they are taking DC around...but religious beliefs and taking him ToTing? weird.

We never have any ToT'ers, so we are going to a friends neighborhood and passing out candy and taking DS ToTing there.

  • We are taking Nora around, but not giving out candy.  We won't be home to give candy out.  When we are, it will be bedtime.  I don't want people ringing the doorbell after Nora is in bed.
  • Eeeeek - We're guilty of this!

TOT-ing hours in my town are from 3p-6p. I don't get home until 5 so I pick up DD @ MILs house and walker her around MILs neighborhood until 6.

There's not enough time for anyone to give out candy at our house... DH gets home around 6:30.

  • My Haloween pet peeve is when kids come to your door with their regular clothes on and a grocery bag and want candy.  I'm all for teenagers still ToTing, fine.  But dress the frick up!

  • That is annoying, although some people might not have a choice (i.e. they are taking their child door-to-door and there is nobody to pass out candy at their house).

  • We dont pass out candy b/c we live in an apartment.. but someday.. we will! Haha! Right now.. with the kids being little.. I couldn't imagine staying home while they were out.. and neither could DH.
  • How are you not "celebrating" Halloween if you got TOTing?

We don't give out candy b/c no one goes TOTing in our neighborhood.  Our neighborhood just isn't conducive to it.  We go to my BFF's neighborhood and I make a goody bag for all the kids that come to her house to eat dinner before.

  • I take DD ToTing and DH stays home to hand out candy.

    My pet peeves are

    1. Kids that look old enough to drive ToTing (unless they have a younger sibling with them)

    2. Kids with no costumes ToTing.

We are jerks and don't give out candy to either of those types of kids.

  • When I was little and we lived in town, my dad always stayed home to give out candy while my mom took us ToTing.  Now that I think of it, I feel kind of bad for my dad.

I'll add my peeve - when a car stops in the middle of the road, and an adult gets out and comes to my door, explaining that their child just got too tired to continue, so he/she's sleeping in the car while they finish up ToTing for them.

Uh, if little Billy is too tired to continue ToTing...........I'd say that he's done ToTing for the year and it's time to go home and go to bed!  WTF!

  • wow, i don't know if that's worse than my neighbors. They took their 1 yo ToTing and then gave out the candy she collected. I'm pretty sure they're planning on doing the same thing today!

  • That is pretty cheap of them, and the religious beliefs sounds like an excuse.  DH takes the kids around the neighborhood and I stay home and hand out the candy.  We don't get a lot of kids since our house is on a hill, and we do playdoh for the little kids so I don't get stuck with leftovers, but this year we will do a playdoh and candy and the older kids will get candy.
  • Yeah, I don't exactly understand the whole religion thing. The wife said it was because they don't want to celebrate a demonic/satanic holiday, but at the same time I think they didn't want their young son to feel left out so they let him put on a dress-up outfit and just go to the neighbors that they knew well.

But yeah, mostly I think it was a cheap thing. The friends are very proud of their frugality in general (not that that's a bad thing, I just don't think it's an excuse for being tacky.)

  • We're taking J to a halloween party and leaving a bowl out on the porch.

  • we're taking jacob out for a bit, he adores being outside anyway! I'm buying a couple bags for when we get home. I'll sit out and pass out the candy while dh stays inside with the dog. We can't have people knock on the door, the dog will go insane, so one of us has to sit outside. My pet peeve is the older kids, who are really too old to be TotTing anyway, and then don't say thank you. My other pet peeve is don't knock at my door if the light is turned off!
  • My parents never gave out candy.  We lived in the country and got NO trick or treaters.  They would jsut take us into town to go trick or treating.

  • Last year a really young couple came to the door with their 3month old SLEEPING baby (it was about 7pm). The parents each had bags and expected candy... I looked at them and said "sorry, I don't have anything that she'll be able to eat..." and shut the door.

My friends were shocked that I did it- but equally annoyed by the young parents. I had DS there- he was 6months old and I wasn't about to take him door to door for candy! (we had taken him to family to visit and show the costume too, but thats all)

  • They didn't celebrate Halloween, but the kids still went trick or treating?  That's not just cheap, that's pretty hypocritical.
  • that's pretty tacky! ?My peeve is when a mom pulls into the culdesac in her minivan and out pour all these kids, then they get their candy from all the houses in the culdesac and pile back into the minivan to go like, 20 feet down the street and do it again! I understand if you live on big pieces of land it it's too much walking for children, but in a suburban neighborhood with houses packed in like sardines? That's just lazy.?
