1st Trimester

Lump in breast at 1st appointment

I had my 1st appointment today and the dr. did a breast exam. She found a lump. It was really tender to the touch and I was ashamed to say I had not felt it. I usually do my self breast exams the week of my period and well, I haven't had one since Feb so I forgot to do it.

She said it was probably no big deal, maybe a milk duct forming or something so I am trying not to worry but it is in my back of my mind. She said we will check it again at my appointment in 4 weeks.

Has this ever happened to anyone else?

And before I get any snarky responses- NO. I did not google it. I think I would get freaked out if I did and I am trying to keep a level head.

  • I haven't had this experience...

Considering that you last checked just two months ago, it's more than likely exactly what the doctor thinks it is. I sure hope you get some good news. Best of luck!

  • I haven't had that experience, but you should monitor the area that it is in. If you see any swelling, increased soreness or redness then I would take note. Then you would need to see a specialized doctor, but if your OB didn't seem worried then I wouldn't worry until you have to. That is, IF you have to.

I hope that it is nothing major & exactly what your doc thinks it is. I wish you the best.

  • I've had something similar. The week my period starts, I always get a lump in my left breast, that we've now associated to hormone changes. Since being pregnant, the lump has gotten harder, and I think its just because my boobs are starting to swell. I know its hard not to worry, but if the doctor was truly concerned, they would've done more testing then. Just try not to focus too much on it (I know easier said than done).

  • I am in a similar situation.  I stopped nursing in Nov 09 and found a large lump in May of 2010.  After many mamograms and ultrasounds, they believe it is a a clogged milk duct that never emptied and became a mass.  yuk!  I am thankful it is nothing more at the moment.  Once becoming pregnant, it is twice as tender and has grown.  They said this is even more reason to believe it is that.  I also have one in my underarm on the side of my breast where breast tissue is.  This didn't surface until this pregnancy.  I am having it checked out tomorrow but they believe it is the whole body preparing for the baby stuff.

Good luck, I will say a prayer that it is nothing more.

  • This happened to me during my first pregnancy. I was the one to find it and it scared the crap out of me! (I'm also an oncology nurse).

Mine turned out to be nothing except "lumpy breast tissue". Try not to get yourself to worked up (I know, easier said than done)  Trust in what your doctor is saying. If she was overly concerned, she would not be waiting 4 wks to check it out, she would be sending you for tests right away.

During pregnancy, with all those hormones, your breasts do some crazy things!

     Hope this helps!

  • I did not have a breast exam at my first dr appointment (I'd had a full physical recently before becoming pregnant), but I did notice a hard lump that was extremely tender around the 5-6 week mark.  I've never had anything like this before so it freaked me out a little, but it did wind up going away, so I believe it was just some crazy hormones!

  • I have not been in this situation but wanted to say that at my first appt they did a breast exam as well and the dr actually told me that during pregnancy it is very common to notice "some lumps and bumps" in your breasts.

  • I had a family member go through this upon getting pregnant.  Her issue ended up by non cancer more driven by hormones it was a cyst.  A milk duct forming would also be another possibility.  If you are feeling stressed please call the dr. and ask to be seen sooner or get a second opinion (that never hurts).  It is likely this is something driven by your surge in hormones caused by pregnancy.

Keep us posted. I know everything will be fine! :)

  • Mine have been pretty lumpy and painful.  I thought that was common during pregnancy.  I don't know why your doctor acted like it's a problem- sure, you should keep an eye on it, but I would assume it's just from hormones at this point.

  • I've never had one, but I've read in a few different places that it's common for lumps to form in your breasts while pregnant or BFing. I wouldn't get too stressed about it. You're body does all sorts of things while your pregnant.

  • I would keep an eye on it but it would also be a calcium deposit.  I found mine a few years back and did some family research and all females on my father's side each have one.  It could be nothing but I would just watch it.
