We're expecting number two in late November/early December. Our son will be 21 months. Is that too early to do a toddler bed?
Realistically, the baby will probably sleep in our room for the first 6 months, so DS wouldn't need to be out of his crib until after he turns 2.
I just don't want to have to buy another crib.
Re: Toddler bed vs. crib
DD1 and DD2 were 16 months apart, but we kept DD2 in our room for 5 months. DD1 transitioned to a toddler bed around 21 months and then we moved DD2 in to her crib. All went well, but I think it depends on your older child's temperament and sleeping habits. Most people on 2 under 2 will tell you that a second crib is a necessity
P.S.- she did go through a phase for about a week where she pulled her clothes out of her drawers, she stopped when I started to make her put the clothes back in the drawers
Thanks for the input!
So far, DS1 is a great sleeper. This could change at any time, so who knows what he'll be like when the baby comes. But I think he'll be fine in a toddler bed. And I think we'll try to transition him before the baby comes even though the baby won't be in the crib for several months.
Ack! I can't believe this is happening...! I just have to keep reminding myself, "people do this all the time. It's no big deal. You can do this!" I'm like Stuart Smalley.
Our kids are 20 months apart. For us, the right choice was buying another crib. We just didn't feel DS was mature and prepared enough for a toddler bed. And we didn't want huge changes right around the birth which meant moving him earlier and we really didn't feel like he was ready earlier.
DS was such a crappy sleeper for so long that now that he sleeps well we don't want to mess with a good thing!
Each of our kids has a convertible crib though so each will keep their furniture for the long haul so that made us feel a little better about owning 2 cribs!
DD - February 2011
We transitioned DD to a toddler bed at 17 months and then a few weeks later to a twin bed. She has done great. Although, I lay with her till she falls asleep she does not get out of bed at night when she wakes up but she sleeps through the night most nights. I didn't want a second crib although I could have had a hand me down one for free, I was ready to make the transition as I got bigger and in and out of the crib got more difficult. I love snuggling at bed time now too which I didn't often get to do because we don't bring her in our bed at night.
I think everyone is different- I read all the posts that swear by a second crib but I knew that wasn't for us.
Good luck!
We transitioned to a toddler bed at 21 months and it has worked out really well. It is a little weird and scary at first because I can hear my son getting up and getting books to read after I have put him down, but he just reads a couple and then goes to sleep. He can open doors, so he gets up in the morning and comes to find us - that was an adjustment! About once every couple weeks he tries to get up in the middle of the night - he comes into our room and says "hi!", and we walk him back to bed and tell him that he can't get out of his room until the sun is out. He does pretty well overall and usually wakes at the same time he did with the crib.
I'm glad we have done it now so I don't have the added change later once the new baby arrives. When we took down the crib, we completely disassembled it and have been storing it so he doesn't think of the new baby as "taking" his bed.
