Hip pain at night- I CANT SLEEP! HEELLLPPP!

The last couple of nights i have had the most AWFUL pain in my hips. I already have a great pregnancy pillow that was working up until now. I have tried sleeping with and without it... doesnt make a difference for this pain. I was trying to only sleep on my sides, but thats when the pain starts, i have tried so many different positions. This wakes me up 7-8 times a night. Anyone else suffering? any tips?

Re: Hip pain at night- I CANT SLEEP! HEELLLPPP!

  • this just started for me last night and i am so bummed.

it happened with my last pregnancy too, but not until about 30 weeks.  sometime around 35 weeks I began sleeping in the recliner downstairs, which helped.

  • We bought a memory foam bed topper and that helped for awhile..however my pain is back pretty much as bad as ever.  I've now moved on two various types of pillows but I'm struggling too.

  • My coworker had this problem. She got this wrap from her chiropractor that wraps at the hips and puts pressure on them. She says it feels so much better. You may want to look into that.

  • Count me in! This just started for me over the weekend, and I'm just achy overall. It's no fun. I don't know what to do because I'm trying to get a head start with the not-sleeping-on-my- back business. I'm a side sleeper naturally but I have NEVER had this problem.

  • I told my doctor about my hip pain at my last appointment.  She said to try laying with your leg laying off the side of the bed to stretch it if you can.  If that doesn't work have your spouse pull your leg by gripping your knee.  For me the pulling on my knee seems to work the best, but I don't usually notice right away, it takes a little while.

She told me this from experience... she said with her first two no hip pain, but with the third it got pretty bad for her.  I love going to a doctor that can sympathize!

  • This just started for me too!  I realized that if I put a pillow between my knees it helps a small amount.  I used to have a full body pillow too, but I stopped using it because it didn't feel like it was helping anymore.  Hope it gets better

  • i've been having that off and on..its probably just temporary. maybe take a warm bath before bed to see if that relaxes them? good luck - i feel your pain! :(
  • I have the same pain also. I do not sleep on my back (as I have read that it can be harmful) so I sleep on my sides as well and have the same pain. I really do not have a solution however I understand exactly what you are going through! We're in it together! Big Smile

  • I know exactly what you're talking about. I've been getting the worst pain in my hips since about week 15. I usually sleep on one side until it starts hurting then I lay on my back for a couple of minutes, then rotate to my other side and repeat ALL NIGHT LONG. It's not much fun, but I've tried body pillows and taking long walks before bed and warm baths and nothing seems to help. I thinks it's just nature's way of preparing us for the sleepless nights we'll have when the baby actually arrives. Good luck!

  • I have had this pain bad too. I have found that the more walks I go on, the less the pain wakes me through the night. However, if I do have the pain, I either sit up cross-legged in bed and lean forward to stretch, or do a similar movement while laying on my back for a short time. My doc pretty much said she could send me to physical therapy if I want, but that's it. Urg.

  • I totally have the same problem unless I do these stretches.  I try to do it for at least 1 minute on each side and it helps a LOT!

  • WOW well im glad im not alone! I hope all of our hip pain ends soon :-/ i see my dr tomorrow for my 16 week appt so hopefully i can get some kind of answers. I hope I can get some sleep soon, and you ladies do too!!

  • I do hope your pains get better or at least not any worse. My 1st pregnancy I had so much hip/back pain that I was i had to quit working at 26 wks, ended up with a walker and w/c. If you do need more help than just stretching exercises, then you might ask your OB about seeing a physical therapist. I saw a PT, had massage therapy and acupuncture which all helped relieve some pain. GL and hope that it gets better for you. I'm pregnant again, so even though it was tough last time I thought it was totally worth it to possibly go through the pain at least 1 more time. I'm still working now with a little pain and discomfort, but I'm planning to work until the end of this pregnancy (fingers crossed).

  • I have this too!  I'm 17 weeks today, and I've been having it for a couple weeks now.  Which has me a little worried considering i'm not really that far along!  I wonder how bad it will be when I actually start showing and putting on weight! Ugh!
I sleep with a thicker pillow between my legs and that helps alot, but if I don't use it, my hips hurt so bad!
I think I'm going to have to start stretching, I'm sure that's some of the problem.
