Baby Names

WDYT of this boy's name?

DH brings this name up out of the blue, but I just don't like it.  It's Bowen.  I know someone with that last name and it just doesn't seem like  a first name to me. Plus our first son's name is Ethan and i think they are too close.  What do you think?  I am hoping others don't like it to prove to hubby it's not one to go with! :)

Re: WDYT of this boy's name?

  • Egh... I totally agree with you. I know someone with this last name as well and it's too close to Ethan!

It just sounds "off" in general as a FN imo

  • Sounds made up as a 1st name and isn't found on behindthename.com. I'd veto it.

  • When Bowen introduces himself to people they will think they misheard him.
  • Middle name Arrow?  Not a fan of this as a FN.  Also ending in "n" same as Ethan and both with two syllables is too similar for my taste.

  • I have a nephew named Bowen.  It has grown on me a little, but I still don't care for it much.  I don't feel like it ages well and when SIL first told us his name, DH and I both thought "bow-n-arrow".

  • I don't care for it.  It's very surnamey and doesn't go well with a classic like Ethan.

    Owen would be cute.

  • thanks ladies...I told dh the bow and arrow thing...i think it stopped the liking :)
  • The Bowen Arrow made me smile :-)

I actually do know of a person with the last name of Bowen.  I think it would really depend on what Bowen's last name would be.  Over all not bad, but I think that there are better options out there.

Welsh surname...over time, "ap Owen" gets slurred into "Bowen."  "Ap"(or sometimes "Map") is the Welsh equivalent of Mac/Mc/O' elsewhere in the Celtic-linguistic world.

Totally. I doesn't sound right calling someone that as a first name.

  • I read it as Bow-wow like a dog.  Needless to say, I am not crazy about it.

  • I have 2 nephews, Ethan and Bowen. My sister didn't tell anyone Bowen's name until after he was born which was smart because I'm sure she would have received a lot of unwanted comments about it. He is the only Bowen that I have ever heard of. I think it's cute and different.

  • That was a middle name that I really liked. I wanted to name our DS Charles Bowen or Sean Bowen. I wanted to call him Beau. DH hates the name Beau or Bo(he thinks it is a hick name). I really like Bowen.
