Putting a pillow in the crib?

Has everyone put a pillow in LO crib? I haven't yet. DS is 21 months old, he shows some interest, just not sure if he would actually sleep on it.

Plus how long when you did put it in the crib did your LO figure out how to sleep on it?

Just wondering

Re: Putting a pillow in the crib?

  • I gave DS a mini pillow pet about a month ago.  It got really flat after just a couple of weeks.  Last night, I put a flat, adult-size pillow in his crib, and he has been sleeping on it.  He has bronchiolitis and is terribly congested at night.  I am desperate for anything that will help him (and me) sleep better.

  • Kayla's had one since she was about a year old, now she actually has her pillow pet in her crib now.

I don't know if you've tried this, but when Pierce is sick we always put a pillow underneath his mattress so that his head is elevated. It's kind of a rookie tip, but I thought I'd offer it to you since it's helped with Pierce when he's been sick. :)

  • I just put a pillow in Asher's crib.  He is almost 1.  The night I put it in there he slept on it and he slept better and longer than he ever has!

  • Mine fell in love with his older siblings pillow pet.  He would go love on it all the time.  He got one for Xmas and a month or two ago, I let him have it in his crib.

  • I bought a cute mini decorative pillow for DD at bed bath and beyond, after she showed interest in laying on the couch pillows. The first night I showed her how to use it by putting my head on it and she immediately copied. It's been in her crib since she's a year and she loves it. I bring it on overnights now too when she sleeps in the pnp.

  • We did when LO was 1. She moved around a lot before but her head is always on it now. Give it a try!
  • A couple of months ago, DD started waking up 1-2X's per night. I put a pillow in the crib to see if she would sleep better and it seemed to work! Although who knows, I think she was cutting some teeth around then too, but I continued with the pillow anyway.

  • DS didn't even start sleeping in his crib until we put a pillow in there and he has done well since then, right after his first birthday,

  • My son has had a pillow in his crib for several months. He started wanting to sleep on a pillow when he was sleeping with us. He'd hog my pillow. He loves it and does great with it. I think it helps him sleep better at home. At first I was nervous, but he does wonderfully with it, so I'm okay with him having it now.
  • He got a pillow pet for his first birthday, and let him have it at naps.  Around 15 months we let him have it at night as well.  He had been cosleeping with us whenever he woke up since he was born, and always managed to push his way on to our pillows.  As soon as we let him have it, he slept on it.

  • DS is 22 months and I just put one in there this week for the first time...now that we've changed over to a toddler bed.  It's a pillow made from millet seed.  (I also have a millet one)  It's not a fluffy one that makes me concerned safety-wise, and he really seems to like it.

  • Nope, we haven't, but I'm thinking about it. Still paranoid about the safety of it, but then again, I'm an obsessive worrier. Embarrassed

  • We just introduced a Pillow Pet this month. It's been about 2 weeks and sometimes she'll sleep on it, sometimes she just tosses it out of the crib.

It's safer to elevate the whole end of the crib than just the mattress. This can create an unsafe gap that can be a suffocation hazard. If you are going this route, it would be better to put one end of the crib up on some blocks.

I already have the crib elevated at one end.  That helped for normal colds, but this one is a beast.
