Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Shaking her head back and forth- is this normal?

LO has, in the last week, started shaking her head back and forth up against my arm when she's tired and trying to go to sleep. It's not fast or anything like convulsions, but it's kind of odd to watch. Is this a self-soothing thing or do you think I need to be concerned about it?

  • My DD does this too. I always chalked it up to it being soothing.

  • DD did this until about 18 months and DS just started doing it last week. I sure hope its normal.

  • It's very normal.  Our LO does this quite a bit especially when we put him in his infant carrier in the morning.  My pedi said it's completely normal and LO is just testing how much he can do with his neck and also blurring his vision because he thinks that a new and neat trick.
  • Little man does this whenever we put him in the swing. I hate watching it because it makes me so nervous.

  • My son does this before he falls asleep.  I wouldn't worry about it.
  • Such a relief to see so many other babies do this.  I was really beginning to worry she was having some sort of seizure or something

  • this is SO perfect  because I've noticed DS doing this the past week or so and was worried something was up.  He'll shake his head back and forth really quick and kinda squint his eyes and i was afraid it was like Tourette's or something.  hmmm, i still worry...
