3rd Trimester

Runners

if you ran during your pregnancy,

are you still running? if no, when did you have to stop?

I have been running so far and feeling good, but not sure realistically how long i will be able to keep going.

thanks!

Re: Runners

  • I'm "allowed" to keep running, but personally I had to stop at about 15 weeks because my knees started killing me. I think it may have been joints loosening.

That said, I did make an epic 10-gate dash in the airport at 27 weeks to catch a flight. Sooo glad I was wearing my tennis shoes. DH and I were quite a sight with bags flailing and me clutching my bump for dear life.

I walk now, and even that is getting tough. It definitely helps my backaches, though.

    Good luck!

  • I stopped running in 1st tri, mostly because I was just paranoid and didn't feel comfortable continuing.  I have been walking and doing elliptical since then.  However, I can tell you that even walking is getting a bit uncomfortable now on some days (this has just started within the last week or so).  My belly starts to feel really "heavy" about 8-10 mins into my walk, if that makes any sense.  So I've had to slow down my pace (usually I'm walking pretty fast).

I know some people have continued running with the help of a support band, which tends to ease the discomfort as your abdomen gets bigger.

  • My first symptom of pregnancy was mega cramping while I was running, so I gave it up in the very beginning. It's one of the things I'm looking forward to getting back into the most after baby's born, though!

  • I ran up until the end of my second trimester, but then the round ligament pain from my belly bouncing started to really bother me.  I was still doing 5Ks fairly regularly until December.

I'm dying to go for a good run! I have jogged a little bit on the treadmill a couple times in the last two weeks.  I've been trying to walk on the treadmill for 30-40 minutes each day and throw in 5-10 minutes of slow jogging when it feels right but stop when it gets uncomfortable.  Its the pressure on my bladder that stops me now.

  • I ran up until my 6th month, then moved to a very slow jog/fast walk because it started to get uncomfortable.  I also had to pee every time I started to run so jogging has been much easier.  I miss running and the rush I used to get so I moved it into the pool and run laps in the pool once a week.

  • thanks everyone. Great to get a sense!
  • I am still running.  I was running 25-35 miles/per week before I got pregnant and now am only doing around 10-12 per week. I am still also doing spin and cardio/weight classes as well.

My pace has decreased from 9 to 10:30/11 gradually over time.  I just make sure I am never out of breathe and can always carry on a conversation.

Just make sure you listen to your body and you should be fine!

  • I still run about 3-4 miles a couple days a week (and walk on non-running days).  My OB said I can continue until my body says its time to stop.  I've slowed down and cut my mileage back A LOT (I used to run 60 miles per week when marathon training).  I listen to my body and take walk breaks when I need to.  hopefully I can continue running for a few more weeks!
  • Let me ask you runners a question... Did you always love to run?? I started doing boot camps and running after I had DS to get back into shape but I never had the passion to run even though I knew that was the best workout. I did start participating in 5k's every month but after awhile I just didn't have the urge anymore and stopped doing them. I mean I wasn't the best and would mostly walk/run them.

  • I got to 3rd trimester and stopped. Even though doctor's say it's "OK" -- in my mind I couldn't help but feel it wasn't good for the baby to be bouncing around so much. Especially toward the end, when they're upside down ... the thought just freaked me out. It won't kill me to give it up for 8 to 10 weeks, I'll just go for hearty walks.
