So Did Your Parents Do A Good Job?

I was sitting here thinking about how we are about to brand a child with a name that she has no input in and its one of the most defining things about a person. I started thinking about how I feel about my name and thought I would see if you think your parents picked a good name.

My name is Kaylan Nadine. I have always loved my name although I have been called 'Kaitlyn" more times than I am called by my name correctly. Its not so bad now that the name Kailyn has been reaching popularity but 20 years ago no had heard of it. My running joke it the 'T' is optional. lol

Nadine is a family name that my mother, grandmother and great granmother all shared and I hated it when I was younger. My sisters had pretty middle names like Nicole and Joy, I thought mine was old fashioned. The biggest problem with it was they way people pronounced it. They said it like Nay- deen which didnt sound pretty at all to me. I met one of my good friends a few years ago whose name is Nadine but she said that it should be pronounced Nah-deen, which I find prettier lol.

So overall I do like my name and I would say that yes my parents did a good job. I do find it funny that the name Kaylan came about because my mom was desperately in love with Waylan Jennings and wanted a boy to name Waylan. When I turned out to be a girl she said she just put a 'K' in front of it. haha

  • My name is Trinity...virtually unheard of until the Matrix came out. I always got compliments on it and people always asked how/why my mom came up with the name.

The comments irritate me because I'm very personal and don't like to share my business or talk to strangers but I think the unique name suits me.

  • My name is Melanie Dawn and I quite like it. My birth mother apparently named me June Eileen and I am so much happier with Melanie. I do find people pronounce it Melnie a lot, leaving out the 'a' sound but I can live with that.

  • My first name is Corey. I like the name, but wish my parents had spelled it differently to make it more feminine. I can't tell you how many pieces of mail I get addressed to Mr. or how many shocked looks I get when I someone says "I'm looking for Corey" and I reply that I AM Corey. Cori, Corrie, Kori....anything but Corey. I usually am not a huge fan of alternate spellings for traditional names, but in this case I would have preferred it. Oh well.

My middle name is DaNae (prounounced to rhyme with Renee), which is very different but I seem to get a lot of compliments on it.

  • I'm not a fan of my first name. My middle name is a family name, so it's ok although I do not plan to pass it on.
  • My name definitely is a great name for me.  Very professional, very appropriate, very strong name.

  • I am Jennifer Kay. I like it ok, but it is a very common name. I never had a year in school where there wasn't at least 2 other Jennifers. Curse of being born in the 80's I suppose. I understand why my mom chose such a common name though. She went through her pre-married life as Velma Pinkard. I would have picked a common name too...lol.

  • no one had my name in the early 80s, and now it's VERY commonplace.

But you spend a whole post complaining about your name, and then you decide you're mostly ok? just an observation.

  • I have a very, very popular name (for when I was born).  I hated it because in high school there were always at least 2 other girls with the same name in every class.  It is because of growing up being called by my last name or as #1, #2, #3, etc that DH and I have decided to avoid all trendy names for our LO.

  • Love my name, Samantha Grace. Of course Sam is a nikname, but my family all call me Manther, my little sister could never say Samantha, but I love it.

Funny thing, I get called Stephanie and Amanda all the time!

  • My first name is Meghan (obviously) and my middle name was my mom's maiden name. I think they did okay, my name is pretty common, but it never really bothered me.  I lived overseas and it wasn't common there.

  • I absolutely hate my name! I think my mom did a terrible job and she wouldn't let my father have a say in the name. My first and middle name is a family name and I hate that, which is why I'm not against naming after family members. It's just NMS after dealing with sounding like an 105 year old woman. Ick!
  • My name is Katarzyna Weronika, I like my name but I was teased and no one  was able to pronounce it when I moved to the states at age 12 so I became Kathy.  I wish I hadn't sometimes because now I can appreciate how pretty and different my name is (in the US it's very common in Poland since it's just Katherine).  My mom wanted to name me Weronika (Veronica) but my dad didn't like it so it ended up being my middle name, Katarzyna was my grandmothers name but I wasn't named after her.

My name is Jesica! The only thing I like about it is that the spelling helped me stand out a little from the 19 other Jessica's in my class.

I love the name Erin, I think it sounds so pretty. I have a sister with that name but my mom went all you-neek on it: Airan.

Btw they also thought she was a boy said they had picked out Aaron and when it turned out to be a girl they just switched the spelling.

  • I've always liked my name, Chelsea.  When I was born, it was pretty uncommon, now its spelled a hundred different ways and common. Oh well, I was an original:)

The only problem I had growing up was people pronouncing it Chelsea-ah.  I don't know if they just couldn't pronounce "sea" correctly or if my middle initial "A" got tacked on for good measure.

  • I have a weird relationship with my name. I was named after my grandfathers, Andrew and Bernard. My mom is Italian so my name, Andrea Bernadette, is pronounced An-Dray-Ah not An-Dree-Ah. Since I was named after my grandfathers, though, I have always been called by what my grandfather went by, Andi. The only time anyone would call me by my full first name was when my mom introduced me to people. So it was always strangers who would call me by my full first name. Weird.

Then at school when the teachers would call my name for roll on the first day, I would always tell them Andi. They would then say, "Annie?" no Andi, "Angie?" No Andi! They would guess names until I literally said, "No, Andi, like a boy." I was really shy when I was young to this was terribly painful for me and it happened every year.

Then my mom, (still does this btw) would ask me why I wouldn't tell them it's not An-Dree-Ah, it's An-Dray-Ah. "Because, mom, no one calls me that, plus, I already have to explain my nickname to people a million times, I am not going to explain a name they aren't even going to call me too."

That all being said, I actually think that Andrea Bernadette is a pretty name, and I like the nickname Andi. I guess I am just glad to be out of school.

  • I've always hated my middle name, but it's not uncommon so it always turns out to be someone's favorite if I mention it in a group. And it's not really a big deal because it's rare that people learn what it is if you don't volunteer the information.

The only issue with Kristen is that it is so easy to misspell and to confuse with more common things like Kristine, Kirsten, etc.

On my mother's side of the family, the women are famous for refusing to use their given names. My grandmother and an aunt both go by their middle names instead. My mother renamed herself completely at about age five. So at least no one would have been offended if I hadn't liked my name.

  • My first name is Shannon but with two a's instead of an O.  I like it because it's unique but it's a pain to have your name misspelled your whole life.  I had a very Irish maiden name, so there's no guessing on my heritage!

My middle name used to be Christine, which had no meaning to anybody so when I changed my name with DH, I legally changed my middle name to Martin, which is my maternal grandmother's maiden name.  It meant a lot to me to honor that side of my family.

  • Mine did an ok job, however, I just wish they would have spelled it like its supposed to sound and given one of us a different middle name, as I am a twin. Our names are Kylene Nicole and Rylene Nicole. They are pronounced with an "a" instead of an "i" sound - Kaylene and Raylene. At this point in my life I will answer to either!

My DH has what sounds like is two first names. They always use his last name as his first. Annoys me to no end!

  • My name is Miranda Lyne (pronounced Lynne... my mom can't spell.)  Although my name is Miranda I've always gone by Mandy which I think suits me better.  I have no problems with my first name but I really wish my mom hadn't spelled my middle name like Line instead of Lynne.

I was adopted at 8 months and my name before was Tabitha Lee... I'm still not sure if I like Tabby or Mandy better.

  • My name is Barbara Gail. I always loved my middle name more than my first because well my first name is an old lady name. I didn't have any other Barbara's in school however if I went to a function with older people there were always several Barbara's. The nice thing about Barbara is that I have so many nicknames that I swear no two people call me the same name.

  • My name is alright. It was never that popular,  it's a very 1950's name.  I have never met some one my age with my name, but I have met a few people my parent's age with it.  When I was younger I didn't like it.  Now I couldn't imagine being called anything else.

  • I love love love my name!  My first name is Gwendolyn.  I've never met another Gwendolyn, but I have met a couple of Gwen's.  Nicknames: Gwen, Gwenny, Wendy. My middle name is Fortunata (after my father's grandmother). I wouldn't change it for the world.  I absolutely love how unique and beautiful (imo) my name is.

  • I'm not a super fan of my name. Its Staci Lynn. While its not horrible I just wish they had spelled it the most common way. My friend and I have a running joke about how its kind of a stripper name.

  • My name is Kacey Michelle.  It has absolutely no significance to my parents; they just liked the name.  I don't really like unisex names for girls, or super-common middle names, but I'm used to it.  I like that Kacey doesn't have too many nickname options (although I was "fondly" called Basket Kacey by a guy friend in high school), but I don't like that no one spells it correctly.

  • I have always liked my name, Melinda, because it isn't very common which helped growing up with a very common last name. Thank goodness my parents did not name me Jessica, their other girl choice, because I had three friends named Jessica in high school! I never cared much for my middle name until I found out that it is a family name which gives it a great deal of meaning for me.

My name is Kristen too! I love my name, but I do have the issue that everyone wants to call me Kristine (mostly the older people).  I also really love my middle name which is Sue and I love it because it is the same as my mother's and we have a very close relationship.

  • My FN and MN are total 80's names and I had about 5 others in every class growing up. But now there aren't that many for some reason? Maybe it was just super popular where I was born and raised (I live out of state from there)?

I wish my name had been something a bit more original, but I'm not hung up on it at all.

  • I was named after my great-grandmother, Virginia. I didn't like the name as a young child because I thought it sounded like an old lady name. I went by Ginnie, but everyone always thought I was saying Jenny, and so I was called Jennifer a lot. It was also an unfortunate name to have around the third grade when some thought it was funny to point out the fact that it has the word "virgin" in it (Yeah, you're in third grade. Hopefully you're all virgins!). In my adult years, however, I love it. I think it's classy, feminine, and rare but not weird. :-)

  • my parents did a horrible job. my name is bama nichole. it's a family name - it was actually my grandfather's sister's name, and she died when she was 16. it's wierd - i've seen a gravestone with my name on it. eek. i hated going through high school with this name (i don't really even care for nichole) so i said screw the whole thing and have gone by nik since tenth grade. it suits me. my oldest brother's name is nicholas, and he goes by nic - which i thought was cool because were very close. • My name is Priscilla Irene. Which I love now. But when I was young I didn't like it because it was long. Priscilla my mom got by a magazine cover with Priscilla Presely and liked the name. Irene comes from my mom's favorite aunt.

  • I love my name. Laura Elizabeth and I go by Beth. My mom always intended it that way. I have never had any problem with my name. It never bothered me that I would have to correct the teachers in school to call me Beth. My maiden name always got on my nerves. We had to always say it and then spell it. Now that got annoying. So glad my last name is a more common name.
  • I really like the sound of my first and middle names together - Erica Nicole - but I wasn't a super big fan of my first name alone, kind of meh about it.  I think the big thing is that I never had a nickname (until my little sisters started calling me Kiki -- they're pretty much the only ones who call me that in real life, but I love it, hence why I use it on message boards).

What's strange is that growing up, I always signed my name with my middle initial, and folks would assume it stood for Nancy. ::shrug::

  • I never liked my name much. Its Kami Anne. I always thought it was too short and bland, plus nobody can get it right. They either call me something else (Tami, Candy, Carrie) or spell it wrong. I have definitely struggled trying to pick out a name for my little girl because I want her to have something unique and beautiful, that isn't totally out there. I love some of the really popular names right now, but I don't want to subject my daughter to being a number in her class either.

  • My parents were so convinced I was a boy, they didn't have a girl name either. My first name is Elisabeth with an S because my mom didn't want me being called Lizzie. I personally like my name because it is classic but separated me from all the other Elizabeths and my middle name is a very common 80's name but goes well with it.

However, my mom completely regrets spelling my name with an S because it was spelled wrong on just about everything as I was growing up. I have a much younger adopted brother who had a "you-neek" spelling of a common name and my mother said she was not going to go through this again, so when they legally changed his last name, she also changed the spelling of his first name by one letter.

  • No, b/c my parents called me by my middle name. I promised myself I would NEVER do that to my kid. Even if the order sounded weird, I would name my kid what I wanted to name him/her as the first name, the other name would come second. Thankfully, now that it's become a reality, the name sounds good together (first name, middle name in the right order). I STILL to this day have problems with my name (I really dislike my first name, have gone by my middle name my whole life)--I just wished the 'rents had done my names in the reverse order.
