I think it is cute, but like a pp said would be afraid of coming off as tacky. So I think I will do a book themed party for the first birthday, since no one really knows what to buy a 1 year old anyway.

Personally, I think it's tacky. And, many of the books that you end up with are dollar store cheapies that you wouldn't read to your child anyway. If people write in them and you get duplicates then you can't return the duplicates. People who want to buy books will buy them, regardless. If you want books, put some on your registry.
agreed, aside from the dollar store part.
It is no different than telling people what to buy you. Demanding a specific gift is tacky, no matter how cute of a poem you find to dress it up with.

I'll preface this by saying that I'm not a big shower fan and I'm not having a baby shower. That said, I think it's asking for gifts (on top of gifts from your registry).

I read dollar store cheapies as a kid. There's nothing wrong or tacky about less expensive books. Are you saying you wouldn't read a book to your child if it didn't meet a certain cost threshold? That's ridiculous! Get the sitck out of your butt.
I think its nice, but I wouldn't do it in leiu of a card, since books are more expensive than cards. You can have a book theme to your shower, though, and people might get the hint that you need books. I think I want to have a book shower for my work one, because I already will have another shower and I don't have room for lots of stuff.
I agree with all of this, especially the last part. I never spend a lot on cards, bc, let's all be honest--very few keep all of the cards that we get/got at showers (I didn't keep any at all) so I don't worry about spending much on them, maybe from the .99 rack or just $2. Most books (unless you do the $1 store) are going to be $4-5 or more.

I think it's a great idea! I'm kind of jealous I didn't come up with it on my own. I have all of my old baby books though so asking for more would turn our baby library into baby's library of congress lol.
Anyway, I think it's perfectly fine to ask for books in place of cards. I would just make sure it feels like a fun alternative for people who want to go the extra mile, and not a requirement in case someone doesn't want to spend quite as much.
I did this for my sister's shower and everyone had a lot of fun picking out books for the baby. It was a great conversation starter during the present opening as well. Everyone remenisced about their favorite classics. Surprisingly enough my sister did not receive any repeats. There are so many wonderful books out there to pick from! To this day she still talks about how nice it is to read the little notes in the front to the baby.
As for cheap books I got some "cheap books" to use more for decoration at the party but then for her to keep. One of those books is the baby's favorite, so don't write off "cheap" books!
I'm confused why so many thinks it's tacky. That is the LAST thing I thought of when I went to a shower like this. Now regardless if they say it's a "bring a book" shower or not, I will be bringing a book instead of a card. But that's just my style, I'm a teacher, and I think it's an easy, and inexpensive gift that will last a while!
Love the poems provided. I am going to have to save them for if I ever host a shower!
telling people to buy a book instead of a card = telling people what to buy you = tacky. period.
might as well just send an invitation that says, "you have been chosen to buy 2 blue mini mam pacifiers, 6 3-6 month white onesies and the extra base for the car seat". We thank you for following directions when coming to the shower!

There are a LOT of posts so I didn't go through all of them so I don't know if this has been said already but this is what I used when I threw a shower for my best friend.
Although cards are nice with their sentiment and prayer, They're read once or twice then tucked away with care. A book is a treasure, words and pictures unite Read over and over to teach and delight. So instead of a card for Baby and mother, Please give a child's book with your thoughts in the cover. Your book will be cherished; God will watch from above, When it's read they will remember your kindness and love.

Now, I wouldn't mind going to a shower where that ^ was on the invite, specifically the part about new or gently used welcome. That means that women who are already on a budget and buying things from the registry have a little bit more options when they can go through their kids' own bookshelves
