My work told me that's why I have STD, to use it for maternity leave. since it's only about 60% of my salary it just wasn't an option and I had to go back to work.

I'm from Texas and I think that you have to have it prior to becoming pregnant or it is considered a pre-existing condition. However, one of my coworkers was able to get it but she didn't receive the full benefits - just a percentage. It's worth looking into, especially if you are PG with multiples. I had to leave work (4th grade teacher) at 27 weeks with my twins - and thank goodness for Short Term Disability or we would have been in a serious financial jam!

You are asking about supplemental short term disability insurance right? Every state has disability insurance you will automatically get when your doctor puts you on disability (every doctor/situation is different, esp with multiples.) In CA we only get 55% of our income from 4 weeks before delivery to 6 weeks after if there are no complications or c-section etc.
Supplemental disability insurance (like Aflac etc) is in addition to whatever your state offers and if you have any pre-existing condition, including pregnancy, it will likely not be covered. In fact, when I signed up for Aflac I was told I could not get pregnant for 60 days after coverage began in order for it not to be "pre-existing." Every company is different any you may be able to find one that is differnent, just have to do some digging! GL!

With AFLAC, you can sign up even after finding out you're pregnant, but it only covers you, and not for 30 days after signing up. It doesn't cover any children born within 10 months of signing up.
That being said, I signed up for AFLAC, it will be in effect when I hit 26 weeks, and just for being admitted to the hospital, having a c-section, and a 4 day stay, I'll get almost $2000. That's not even including the fact that they'll pay for a hotel for my hubby to stay near the hospital since its more than 50 miles from my home, or any follow up care afterwards/ preterm care beforehand. $100 a month for it, and I can cancel as soon as I want, so for 4-5 months of payments, we'll make a couple grand. Worth it to me.

I actually work for a disability insurance company. The only states that have state disability are CA, RI, NJ, NY & HI. Otherwise, there is FMLA which is unpaid, or if your employer has Short term Disabilty. If your employer does, ask for a copy of the policy. It all depends on the policy. If it has a pre-ex clause then you would not qualify. If there is no pre-ex, then you should get at least 6 weeks after delivery. Some policies only cover 6 weeks for vaginal or c-section. HTH
