Asking for books instead of cards at a shower

I have seen this posted a few times now and I'm wondering if there is a tasteful way to ask guests to bring a book for the LO in lieu of cards?  I absolutely love the idea and I hate greeting cards anyway, I think they are so useless and pointless, all I end up doing is throwing them away whereas a book we can keep and enjoy for yrs.  If you did this how did your shower host phrase it on the invitation?

Re: Asking for books instead of cards at a shower

  • I can't remember the exact wording but for one of my friend's showers her sister made a little poem up... it was really cute, but I bet she had gotten it by Googling or something. It worked... everyone brought her son books!!!

Although cards are nice with their sentiment
    and prayer,
They're read once or twice then tucked away
    with care.
A book is a treasure, words and pictures unite
Read over and over to teach and delight.
So instead of a card for Baby and
    mother,
Please give a child's book with your thoughts in the cover.
Your book will be cherished; God will watch from above,
When it's read they will remember your
    kindness and love.

We can't wait to see you at the shower
When (mom-to-be's name) will be the woman of the hour
We have one request we hope isn't too hard
Please sign your name to a book instead of a card
Then mom and dad will be ready when the baby arrives
To read to their darling for the rest of their lives

  • I threw a shower for my Best Friend in November and at the bottom of the invitation I just wrote

~In Lieu of a Greeting Card please bring your favorite Children's Book.

  • A "book" shower was thrown for my co-worker a couple of years ago. The invite just had a note stating that they were trying to build Baby _______'s library so to bring your favorite book to the shower. It was a huge hit!

I know I would much prefer a book to a card. DD and I read several books each night so they definitley get a lot more use.

  • You could somehow do a one-liner on "Please help us preserve your first message/wish for Baby ___ by writing inside a book instead of card"... or something more eloquent :)
  • My friend had it on her shower invite. It simply said, "The mom to be is requesting your favorite children's book in lieu of a card." I thought it was quite tasteful and got her Goodnight Moon. She got a bunch of books.

  • I just got a baby shower invitation from a friend who did this. There was a little slip of paper in the invitation that says "Help (insert parent's names) build a library for the baby. Instead of a card, get a copy of your favorite children's book and autograph it."

I thought it was very tastefully done and love the idea!

I hate cards. I think they are a waste of money and paper.  Id perfer an extra slip of wrapping paper to a card anyday. A card is like 3.99-4.99 and you can get a kids book for that, or less. I always being a kids book instead now. It jsut seems smarter/greenier/better.

I was in charge of invites for my SILs baby shower and my wording was similar to this.  It worked well and she received a slew of books for my niece.  I did receive some nasty comments, mainly from my MIL (yes my SIL's own mother) about how expensive books are and she thought the idea was lame.  My response to that is, "Ever hear of TJ Maxx, Marshalls, Home Goods, or the Dollar Tree?"  All these places have decent books for people who don't want to make a book part of their gift to baby.  :)

  • I love this idea, and have seen it done a lot! Cards are so annoying.

  • My MIL printed out a cute poem and included it as an insert.  Here is the poem:

    Although cards are nice
They're read maybe once or twice.
    A book is a treasure
    That will last forever.
    So instead of a card
    To be put aside
    Please give Baby________
A book with your name inside.
    And we'll remember and share

Your special gift even when you're not there.

  • I am hoping my MIL did this for my shower....A friend did this for hers, the poem was REALLY cute...went something like :

"From Peter Rabbit to Mother Goose
    Goodnight Moon and Dr. Seuss
Curious George and Winnie the Pooh
The little Engine that Could, too.

In lieu of a card, please bring
    your favorite childhood classic,
Let?s build a library for ____ that will be fantastic!"

I thought it was totally adorable, tasteful, and not pushy!

  • A card is great for a quick look,

But for a lasting memory, please bring baby a book.
