road trip! how many hours in the car?

DS Will be 9 months in July, and we'd love to do a road trip to a cabin or something.

What's the longest car ride you would take with a 9 month old? (Not including the multiple stops he'll need to eat etc)

Re: road trip! how many hours in the car?

  • We drove from RI to Michigan.  12 hours.  I was anticipating a disaster, but we left late (3pm) and drove straight through.  He slept almost the entire way....more than he usually sleeps at home!  He was 9 1/2 months old.

On the way back, we stopped halfway.  It was much easier than I thought it would be.  I did ride in the back with him whenever he was awake.

  • We did a 14 hour trip when K was 7 months old. It took us almost 18 with all the stopping for feeding and diapering but she did ok.

  • We are planning on taking a long road trip this summer too.  It will be about a 12 hour drive.  We plan to drive at night so DD will sleep most of the way.  This is the way I always traveled as a kid and it works out well.

  • You are all brave!  Those are long trips.  I've taken DS on several car trips but not more than 3 hours.  That seems to be his max.  He'll sleep that long and then be ready for a break.  He isn't a fan of the car seat so unless we planned to stop for 2+ hours until he was tired again, he would scream if we put him back in the seat!  One idea might be to leave later in the evening so he could sleep the entire way!
