2 month shots and Tylenol

Baby A has his 2 month shots next Thursday and my mom asked about giving him Tylenol prior. I know plenty of people do this, but his Dr. did not say anything about it when he mentioned shots at his last visit. Anyone hear of it not being ok for them to have tylenol prior? What kind of tylenol did you give your LO...do they only make one kind of babies?

Re: 2 month shots and Tylenol

  • I asked my Dr. about this - she said the old school thing to do was to give shots prior and then the AAP came out and said that it could make some of the vaccines ineffective, or rather less effective, so they no longer recommend doing this. My Dr. said we can give after only if certain symptoms occurred but I went ahead and gave them anyway and was glad I did. LO was cranky...I can't imagine if I hadn't given them.

  • I would wait to give it to LO soon after the shots. The pedi can tell you the dosage-it depends on their weight. but yes, you use the children's tylenol that comes with a dropper.

  • My pedi specifically recommends NOT giving tylenol prior to shots - both for the AAP reason listed above and because not all kids need a dose.  He asks that we wait and see how DC reacts and then decide if meds are appropriate.  We've never given tylenol prior to shots because of this advice - and I've only had to go back and dose DS once after seeing that he was cranky and sore + spiking a bit of a fever.

  • Our doctor said not to because it can make the shots not as effective. I want to make sure my child is vaccinated well against all these things that can kill him so why would I give him Tylenol after my doctor specifically said not to. I think you should call and talk to your doctor if you are considering it. Its not woth the risk in my opinion.

  • Not considering it if it's going to hurt him. Just something my mom who raise children 24 years ago asked about. I did not know that there was something raised about giving tylenol prior. Obviously, I will wait. No call to the dr needed.
