Pregnant after a Loss

Can I have a cup of tea?

I have not had one drop of caffeine so far, but I couldn't sleep last night. I am so tired I could cry. I have a two hour class and lessons to finish for tomorrow. Will one cup of tea be okay. I know caffeine has been linked to m/c but that tiny amount okay?

Re: Can I have a cup of tea?

  • My OB said that I can have 200 mg of caffeine a day.  I would call the nurse at your OB's and ask if you are really worried.

  • From americanpregnancy.org (my OB's fact sheet states between 200-300mg)

Facts: Experts have stated that moderate levels of caffeine have not been found to have a negative effect on pregnancy. The definition of moderate varies anywhere from 150 mg - 300 mg a day.

How much caffeine is in your favorite drinks & snacks?

    • Starbucks Grande Coffee (16 oz) 400 mg
    • Starbucks House Blend Coffee (16 oz) 259 mg
    • Dr. Pepper (12 oz) 37 mg

This.  Most tea has less caffeine than coffee.  I think a cup of black tea runs around 40-50 mg of caffeine but google knows the exact answer.

  • Definitely call your OB's office if you're truly concerned; with that said I've followed the guidelines the PP's have listed and haven't had any issues.

My OB also told me this, but I've decided to completely cut out caffeinated drinks since it may affect vitamin absorption. I may already have trouble with FA and B vitamins absorption due to my MTHFR.
