Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Is there any truth to this??

Does anyone know if there is any truth to the idea that milk consumption causes or contributes to reoccuring ear infections??

  • No. I have heard the causes being genetic, exposure to second hand smoke, teething, colds, lowered immune system but never milk consumption. I have read that BF babies get less ear infections because of the sucking motion but Grace was breastfed for 10 months and has had 9 fafillion ear infections. So I don't even believe that.

  • I haven't heard that but for some reason I think that I have heard that milk can increase mucus production and maybe that would cause more ear infections. I really don't remember where I read/heard that so I could be completely wrong.

P.S. Your siggy pic is too precious!

  • Nope!  I guess you're talking about cow's milk.  Anyway, LO is BF and had a nasty double ear infection around 10 months that last about 3 weeks, luckily he has not had any others.  My mom said I had lots of ear infections as a baby/toddler.

  • Not sure about that, but I have heard that babies laid down with a bottle and left are more likely to have ear infections.

  • Yeah, I havent heard anything about milk causing ear infections, what my doc told us was that using Q-tips was bad, even the baby kind that wont let you put them in to far.  He said that Q-tips in general are bad, they dont get the wax out so much as they can push it in farther. Idk if that has anything to do with the infections.

  • Yes but it is actually an allergy that causes it.  See #2 in the link:

You can read more if you google the topic.

  • DS has never had an ear infection and he has been drinking tons of milk since I weaned him from BF 3 months ago.

  • Frequent ear infections is one of the symptoms of a cow milk allergy.
