Baby Shower Gift Question...

Hi Ladies!  Question for you...  I plan to spend $60 on my friends shower gift. Should I buy one big thing or a few smaller things to get to that amount?  Not sure if I should leave the bigger things for her family or just go for it.  Thoughts?

Re: Baby Shower Gift Question...

  • I say go for a bigger item! When I was pregnant with my first everyone told me not to stop buying stuff for my baby...that "this was my first baby and I would get EVERYTHING I needed at my showers!"....well  I didnt! As a matter of fact I didnt get ANY of the BIG items off my registery! So a month before due date we went to BRU and spent close to $1000 on big items!

  • Well, $60 is not that BIG of a gift IMO. When I think big, I think at least $80-$100 plus.  That being said, I love gift baskets.  I love putting them together.

For my friend's shower a few weeks ago, I had the same budget.  I went to target and got one of those fabric drawers (only $6 or $7 in the storage section).  Then I picked out stuff from her registry that I could use to fill it up.  I got a bunch of boring, practical, small items that a lot of people don't like getting. Baby orajel, tooth paste, bottle scrubbers, dishwasher basket, pacies.  Those kinds of things.  Then I got a couple of cuter items: the tubby towel, a set of onesies, and some bows.  It was definitely one of the more practical gifts there, and she seemed to really like the bin I put it in--also very practical.

If your friend as registered for any kind of cute basket or maybe a diaper caddy, you could always do the same thing.

For a bigger item, if she is registered for the Bumbo ($40), you could get that with the tray(<$10) with a stack of bowls or something small.  That would get you pretty close to $60.00, and the Bumbo was highly recommended to me by a mom of 5.

  • I always just pick out something I like.  Usually I get a bigger item if it's within my price range.  :)
  • When I said bigger gift I basically meant just one of the gifts she has at $60 (her diaper bag or the bouncer).  But I do like the idea of getting a basket and filling with smaller things too.  I'm torn!  I'll see what happens when I get to the store this afternoon.

  • Do whatever you want. Most likely family is going to spend more than $60...so if there's an item on there for $60, go for it. Sometimes I like to just get one big gift, if I'm in a rush shopping. Otherwise I like to get a lot of little things and put together a big basket of all the things, etc. I know a lot of people don't put the time/effort into buying the small things...so I take it upon myself to do that!

  • I would opt for the $60 gift instead of the little things b/c the little things can be bought in stages and make less of an impact on her wallet if bought over time. At least, that is how it is for me. I could pick up a few of the small items at one time, wait a week and go back and pick up some more. Whereas $60 in one pop might hurt a bit more.

  • I would look at her registry.  Have people bought any big items?  No? Then I would get one big item.  Have people not bought any of the little items?  Then I'd go with that.  Some people do have families that are willing to drop $$, but some do not.  Either way, you are a nice friend!

  • So I ended up buying everything in her bath section (two towels, kneeling pad, step stool/seat bath storage and threw in a rubber ducky cause I couldn't help myself)!  Hope I made the right decision. I will kick my self if no one buys her the diaper bag but the bouncer was already gone so I'm hoping diaper bag will be bought too.  Thanks for your advice.

  • My decision is usually based on who the gift is for.  If I know the other gift givers and I know they're the kind of people that get the practical, much needed but boring gifts I'll go the fun route, or vice versa.

When I get smaller gifts though I always keep it within a theme.  For example, SILs shower is this weekend and we're only spending $20 on each other so I didn't get her much, but I got her some of the feeding stuff she registered for - sippy cup, white-hot spoons, bowls.

  • I personally prefer the bigger item.  If that is my budget I look for items in that range and get what I like best.  A gift basket is also nice if thats the route you decide

  • It's nice that you ended up getting a "theme" gift - bath time!  I usually like to get a larger item if it's in my budget -- I always figure that there are going to be grad students or others with less means attending the shower, and I don't want to steal all the cheap gift options if there is a larger gift that I can afford to get. That being said, if I'm buying last minute (as I often am) and the larger items are taken (as they often are), I have no problem just doing a clean-up of the registry and getting a random assortment of whatever is left.  I'd rather do that than get them a "big" gift that isn't on their registry... I figure they know what they want!

  • A small gift that seems cool was onesie stickers

A really neat shower gift and very affordable and meaningful, was these stickers called onesie stickers. They were removable stickers that are meant to be placed on the belly of the baby but they read 1 to 12 months. So monthly for the first year you record pictures with that monthly sticker on the baby and it is great for scrapbooking. They take the stickers and place them in their scrapbooks. It was a big hit and I guess it's a new thing some people had heard of them and some hadn't.

they had got them from a Onesie Sticker Seller from ecrater:

  • I'd go for bigger. Or maybe two seperate items like the Boppy and Bumbo. People with a smaller budget will go with clothes and and smaller nick nack stuff...
