Pregnant after a Loss

I hate being in limbo (work ment)

So I am a teacher, and our contracts for next year are coming out any day now. Once I get it, I will have 30 days to sign it. Here's the catch: as it stands right now I have to go back full time next year because we can't afford for me to stay home. My other option is an online school I applied for that would allow me to work from home, but their contracts don't come out until after ours is due to be turned in, which in the state of AZ if I sign a contract with one district, no other district can hire me. Which is really stupid. So if I wanted a chance at the online job, I would basically have to forfeit my contract at my current school and cross my fingers that I get an offer at the online school. Then my good friend and former colleague texts me today to see if I am still interested in going part-time next year and job sharing with her. We had discussed this when I was pg with the twins because she had just had a LO and we were going to job share/babysitt share. Then obviously with the losses that didn't work out. Well, I would LOVE to job share with her because it would allow me to keep teaching, and I would be sharing all the work and I would have much, much more time with LO. But I just don't think we can afford me being part-time right now. DH is going through the security clearance/hiring process for a good government job right now, and that could possibly make the difference between me being able to work part time or not...but who knows when we will find out the outcome of that job. UGH. I just hate not knowing what to do and feeling trapped because of dumb contracts. I also feel bad not being able to tell my friend one way or another.

  • That would suck to be in that pickle.  GL and I hope everything works out ok.  I know teachers here in Ohio are having a horrible time with contracts due to that stupid Senate Bill 5!

  • Tough, tough decisions!

I'm praying that the decision you make turns out to be the best possible outcome for you, your LO and your DH.

  • Good luck with your decision!  I was in a similar situation--- hoping to go part-time.  My DH was waiting to hear on a second job and I had to tell my district I was returning before we knew.  DH ended up getting the second job, and now we could swing part-time, but it's too late for this coming year.  I rationalize to myself that this next school year we can save up some of that extra money and pay off our credit cards and pay down student loans.  It may feel like a long school year, but I know we'll just be in a better place for me to cut back.  Maybe if you can't make it work right now exactly how you need it to, you're meant to wait a little bit.  If you do not return to your job and then do not get hired at the online school, what will the stress level be for you and DH?  Could you end up having to settle for a job you don't enjoy?  Could you make enough money subbing and tutoring in your area if need be?

  • That's a tough situation.  I'd be upfront with the friend about your not being able to swing PT so she has time to find someone else.  Government jobs are notorious for taking forever to go through, so it may be literally months before you hear anything for your DH.  Hopefully it'll all work out for the best for y'all and you'll be in an even better financial position come Fall.

  • This is tough.  Do you mind me asking what company you are going to teach online for?  Have you had an interview?  I hold two different positions as an online teacher based in Arizona...  I ask b/c I'm not sure of the structure of your school - I have found that I can sub and teach online (I am only part-time) which might help you bring in some more income .... you might even be able to do the job share and teach online (depending on how the school is set up).  I teach for k12.

Actually it is K12 I applied for. I would take full or part time online if they offered it, and then if I did part-time I would continue teaching part-time or subbing. I live in Phoenix, and I know a lot of people teach there, but I wasn't sure how hard it was to get a job there or what the pay was like. If you don't mind me asking, what is the pay?
