My UO...the teachers on this board biitch entirely too much about being underpaid and underappreciated. Guess what...I'm underpaid and under appreciated too, it's a pretty common theme amongst those of us not at "the top" boo hoo we should all make more money we're SO valuable. You chose that profession knowing what you were in for. There will always be people who appreciate you and people who don't in any profession. Get over it and stop acting like all of the sudden in 2011 everyone decided to start hating teachers. Damn.

As a teacher I would have to agree with you. I knew I wasn't going to make killer money, and I think that the money I do make is pretty darn good, especially considering I make more than most people in my town (I live in the sticks). Besides, I don't teach because the money is good. I teach because when I get out of bed in the morning, I don't get that sinking feeling because I have to go to something I hate for 8 hrs.

I do however believe that most of the under-appreciated feelings come from the way parents and administration reacts to the profession. Parents expect me to turn their snot-nosed brats into little geniuses in the course of a year while fighting against all the crap they learn at home. Parents and admin. are more worried about test scores than creating life-long learners. I don't care if my kids can't remember how to find the indirect and direct object at the end of the year. I care though if they started the year out as a reluctant reader, and they end the year with even a mild interest in reading.

I do commend your attempt to make the board interesting though!

I concur. My Mom is a teacher and I KNOW she is underappreciated. I'm just saying so is EVERYONE ELSE. It's very rare to feel truly valued and appreciated in your occupation. If you do you're lucky. If you don't...you're just like the rest of us.

    Just sayin.

Actually your screaming it, but that's ok. If you feel like your job sucks, vent about it. Maybe teachers are just more vocal (at least the bump teachers) or maybe because it irks you, you just notice when teachers vent and not really notice when someone else vents.

My husband loves his job, and the company treats him great. He's a machinist in a small company in MD. So it's usually me venting about my job to him. And since most of my friends are teachers too, I usually only hear teacher vent. I wouldn't say it's rare for people to feel valued. I think the ones who don't just are more vocal about it!

  • In response to the teacher UO:

I don't necessarily feel underpaid because generally teachers are paid on a step system that increases as your experience increases.  What I have a problem with is tax payers/community members spouting off about us making "80k a year and working 3 hours a day"....comments like this (recent editorial in our local newspaper) are completely false and really give the community a bad taste in their mouth about teachers.

One thing about our pay that I have a problem with is that we're required to have our master's degree within 5 years of graduating with our Bachelors (I've been teaching for 8 years so I'm long done with this).  They are increasing the professional development responsibilities, cutting programs, cutting funding (basically meaning that I have to buy supplies and other things I'd like to have my students experience), and adding to the requirements teachers must meet to obtain their professional certification all at the same time.  All of these things combine to create a job that probably should be paid more than $38,000 (starting salary in my district- $39,500 with a master's degree).  And no, our district doesn't pay for any part of your master's degree incase anyone might think that.

I think teachers are so defensive because they have to be.  They are targeted all over the country lately (they and their Unions).

  • interesting.

as far as the teachers discussion. i am not a teacher and i think they are underpaid. i could never in a million years do what they do. i think the teachers who are good at what they do deserve to be making six figures.

this is the easiest way to explain: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sustainable_development

We spent the first half of our major figuring out what SD is. Smile

And I can go to grad school with this degree! I had planned on grad school anyway, but wanted some work experience first. At the moment, my new, higher paying job, gets me 15 grand a year.

I think I am more hated than a teacher right now in southern California. Why because I work for he government and apparently all government employees retire making $200k a year oh yeah and we're all corrupt too. As for teachers, don't complain about it when that's what you want to do with your life. I would kill for your hours and time off. I may earn a ton of PTO but when you have a crap load of work to do and no one to cover for you it becomes impossible to take weeks off at a time.

    Here's the thing....

"I would kill for your hours

    1. You could have had them, go into teaching.

    2. Do you realize most teachers take home grading/lesson plans every night?

    3.  I don't know about other states, but I get 10 days off for sickness/kids sickness/funerals whatever per year. Try taking maternity leave with 10 days paid off per year

"you have a crap ton of work to do and no one to cover for you"

When I'm gone, my work doesn't sit on my desk and wait for me I have to write detailed plans telling someone else how to try and do it. That might seem like a blessing but it's really not.  It's annoying to be vomiting and trying to type at the same time.

I'm not asking for poor teachers by any means. But just because everyone went to school everyone thinks they understand exactly what goes into our jobs.  I enjoy being a teacher, but like any job there are down sides.  I'd say one of the largest is other folks telling us how good we have it. Come join us, our profession stands to lose a ton of good folks in the next few years.

  • I don't think I'm underpaid as a teacher. I never b!tch about it. In fact, I was shocked at how much I made my first year.

That being said, the "I would kill for your hours" pisses me off. You have NO clue. Zero. And me explaining it won't change your mind. So I'm not going to try.

Okay when I say I'd love the hours I mean more so I'd love to have the option to leave work and be able to pick up ds by 3 pm like my sister who is a teacher can pick up her youngest from pre school. I understand teachers bring work home, so do I and a lot of other working professionals. But as I always tell my husband when he starts to complain, be happy we have jobs so I'll take my own advice. All jobs have their perks and downfalls and it would be nice to be able to pick and choose our perks. Unfortunately that isn't possible so I'll continue to be a lazy govt worker in the eyes of the public and teachers can continue to bask in their wonderful working hours and time off that non teachers think they have.
  • I teach at a charter school, which has 60% of the budget of regular public schools. Because of budget issues, public schools aren't hiring, hence why I've been here for two years. I get paid $10-15k less than first year teachers at all the districts in my area and have half (and sometimes more than half) of the paid personal days that they do. In that regard, I am definitely underpaid compared to my teaching peers in the state. I don't think that the profession as a whole is underpaid, but I do believe it is undervalued - not just by administration (as a pp said), but by the community and state. State legislators cut education funding without batting an eye. Parents don't care if their kids come to school or what goes on there, but they still blame the teacher if the kid is not achieving.

As for hours, we have lots of time away from the school building, but not as much time as you think that is purely "time off". I spend evenings and weekends grading, planning, making powerpoints, designing activities and amassing their related supplies, previewing video clips, etc. Summers are to get a jump in planning for next year and to attend countless professional development workshops. We're not just popping bon-bons and waiting for August to roll around...

btw, I realize many people bring work home. Thats not the only issue re: time off. Yes we have the summer "off" (we aren't paid for it so its not really "off") but we have zero flexibility during the school year. Thats huge.

I think its pretty rare for treachers to be able to pick their kids up every day at 3. I know that I am in the process of looking for day care and I need them to keep DD until AT LEAST 4, and be flexible to 5 or later on many nights. They have to be open to take her at 7 am. So yes, we tend to get out a bit earlier at night, but we also tend to start our days earlier, too. Most people don't consider that.

BUT, I realize there are a ton of perks to being a teacher, hence why I don't b!tch. And, I love it. That is what is important. I just don't like the teacher hate, either, especially when its based on false assumptions. KWIM? I know you feel the same way about your job, and I promise I do not make assumptions about gov't workers.

  • It has gotten too long to quote. I don't hate teachers either and I remain jealous of the unpaid time off I don't get. My sister is on spring Bremen for the next two weeks and at Disneyland today. I sit at work, reviewing plans and writing a sign code I've been working on the past 5 years. It's hot in here and my neck hurts. I just feel like whining and really having myself a margarita in my new blender. I know I sure as heck couldn't be a teacher and spend my day surrounded by kids so trust me, I'm thankful people have the aspiration in life to do so.

  • I'm a little late to the party. But what difference does it make if someone display their heritage via other methods on their cars or homes, but not specifically a flag or bumper sticker?

I'd think it's pretty cool if Isiah wanted to express his heritage is both Chinese and American when he is older. If he wanted to have only Chinese related things to decorate the inside of his car (like how people have things in the back window), would that be just as obnoxious as a Chinese flag on his antenna or a bumper sticker, along with an American flag or something?

Not sure if I'm confused on all this.

I'm going to go with "professor" not "teacher" or teacher in a year round school.  Also, I don't understand why teachers should make six figures (you didn't say this, someone else did).  Sooooo few professionals make six figures.  Much less professionals whose jobs only require a bachelors degree.  Hell, even the majority of PhDs aren't making six figures.  Isn't the mean household income like $70K?  The average starting salary of an attorney isn't even $60K and the average salary (not starting, just salary) of a pediatrician is <$150K a year.  I agree that some teachers are underpaid and overworked, but the idea that the profession as a whole is underpaid and overworked seems strange to me.  If that were the case, wouldn't there be a shortage of teachers?  And isn't there currently a surplus?

Was there a link on P&CE? I saw both you and Julie on here. I missed it!

And good call on professor. Or maybe a teacher at a CC?
