At work yesterday they were talking about a local story that has recently happened involving a 13 year old girl and an infant.

The whole thing I find to be upsetting. Where were the parents of the 13 year old girl. What is a 13 year old doing having sex? Should they hold the 13 year old responsiable?
Re: Sad local story
So, heartbreaking. I hope the girl didn't kill the baby but that is what it sounds like happened. The autopsy will determine that.
In many states 10 is the age at which kids can be held legally liable for their actions. Of course, it is the decision of the State's Attorney's office whether charges are filed on the minor. While on one hand I understand that she's a scared 13 year old but I find it hard to believe that she didn't know wrong from right in the matter. Both sides can easily and successfully be argued. She'll probably be mandated into treatment but I doubt she'll ever see jail time for it. (I work in the juvenile justice field.) I personally think that the parents should also be held liable for her actions and their failure to properly supervise and care for their own child.
What a horrible situation. There are too many stories like this where a young mother hides the baby or throws it away, likely out of shock and denial of the situation. Things like this and all the other things I see in my line of work push me to be a better parent.
