If so, did you tag along? What questions did he or you guys go prepared with?
My DH has a 1st appt. this Thursday. Our RE wants him to go to see if they think he has a varicocele and if so if he should have the surgery. After this appt. we will meet back with our RE to plan our next step.
Any advice on this subject would be much appreciated.
Re: Has your DH seen a Urologist?
My DH saw the uro after his first SA came back with basically no sperm. He had b/w done before he went. The uro reviewed it, did an exam and ordered a second SA. THe second one was muuuuch better and the uro recommended 3 IUIs and then varicocele surgery of they failed. That's where we are now.
GL and PM me if you have any questions!

MH went to 2 different urologists. The first one was right after his 2nd SA. I didn't go, but I was annoyed when I heard that he didn't take any blood. He basically just did some physical testing and MH went back a second time for them to actually do some sort of examination with instruments (can't remember what it was called) that didn't show any obstruction. But the fact that he never did any blood tests or post coital tests really made me think this guy wasn't for us.
The second one he went to on the same day as our 3rd IUI. He was much more thorough. I couldn't go with him, but I gave him a "cheat sheet" to take with him (Uro told MH that I was crazy lol), along with his SA results. The cheat sheet had all of his numbers from the IUIs, the vitamins that he was taking, the lifestyle changes he had made... and then questions like- will you be checking hormone levels (e.g. testosterone)? Will you check for bacterial infections? Could there be other things that impact volume/morphology?
This one ended up doing a full blood work up, but we got a BFP so we didn't pursue the results (plus his numbers on the 3rd IUI had vastly improved).
I hope you get a good urologist... I really think it can make all the difference.
I think it is great that your RE recommended you to a urologist. Our RE that we were seeing looked at my DH's SA and told us that we needed IVF. There was no talk about a urologist. With my research, that is where I found varicocele and I told my DH to go to the urologist. You seem like you have a great RE that is looking out for you and not about getting the big $ for himself.
I did not go to my DH's urologist appointment but sent him with a list of questions. My DH did have varicocele in both sides and had the surgery this past Sept. His number improved greatly to the point where we, fingers crossed, won't need IVF but IUI. My DH still has to go back for blood work in a couple months to see if his other levels are continuing to rise.
I did tag along. We had to give a detailed history and some of the questions were for me, so I am glad that I went along. DH was also checked for varicoceles and luckily, didn't have any. The urologist actually shined light on our situation that the OBGYN and RE were not able to. We felt better after seeing him.
If the uro suspects a varicocele but isn't 100% sure, YH may have to have an u/s. At least this was my understanding of how it works. Some varicoceles are very obvious visibly, some you can feel and some can be there but you can't see them or feel them; those are the ones they do an u/s to check for. Our uro said even if he found a varicocele in the u/s he wouldn't operate on DH, because there was no way to know if the surgery would even help us. So, we opted not to do the u/s.
HTH. Good luck!

Baby N conceived after 1 miscarriage and more than 2 years of TTC. Diagnosis was low sperm count. We found success after 3 months of anastrozole to increase DH's testosterone and one IUI.

My DH did see a urologist, and I did tag along. First, she asked a lot of questions about our medical histories. They were mainly about DH (e.g. did he ever have any trauma, STDs, drug use, etc.), but some had to do with our or my history, which of course DH would not have answers for. She then did a physical exam, which was fairly quick, and then she ordered bloodwork.
At our second appointment, she went through all his results (varicocele and lowish testosterone), gave him a prescription, and answered all of our questions. I asked about the chances of his SA getting better, what her experience with situations like ours was, what she thought about IUI vs. IVF for us, etc.
I definitely wanted to go to these appts with him, partially to just support DH since it was hard for him to have to go to a urologist in the first place, but also so that I could hear firsthand everything that she was asking and saying.
I hope your appointment goes well, and good luck to you!

My DH goes to a Urologist once a year because of his abnormal bladder. When he went last week I just told him to ask the Dr. about a SA and IF. I did not go with him on this trip, mainly because this is a normal doctor and they already know all about him.
If this was not his normal Dr. I would have probable went with him. My DH always forgets to ask things. GL!!!

My DH is going for his first uro. appt. May 5th. He's had 2 SAs with low count and very low motility. Do uro.s usually order B/W at the initial visit?
Since we've been/are waiting 2 months, I'm wondering if we can get the B/W done before the appt., so that he can go over results with us, or if I'm just being impatient and pushy.
Shuts up...
Me: 36, DH: 42

My husband is going in to the uro in May, and the RE ordered a few blood tests so he would have some information going in. I'm not sure if the uro will want to run more or not though.
TTC since 2010
lots of IUIs and 1 IVF all BFNs
FET currently on hold
Definitely call the uro and ask if you can get b/w done ahead of time. Also, they might want a SA done by their own people to look at different things, so ask that too.

My RE ordered the initial SA, so when he referred DH to a uro he sent him for bloodwork to bring with him!
