Thanks to everyone for the suggestions! BM really is a miracle liquid-
it cleared it up within about 24-36 hours. Now we're using petroleum
jelly to keep it protected for a few days. It's so nice to have people who are willing to help out and give advice here!
Baby H appears to be getting a little diaper rash. We're still using disposables for now (Huggies Little Snugglers) and we're using cloth wipes with water and essential oils.
H is only 3 weeks old, and I know we were told by Kaiser not to use diaper creams in the first month. Any suggestions for treatment? My quick research has shown that we could wash with warm water and soap, air dry, avoid wiping too hard, use olive oil or other edible oils, and use breast milk. I do have A&D ointment and CA Baby Calendula Cream as a possibility as well.
In other words, there are a lot of suggestions out there for newborn diaper rashes- any tried and true strategies that you can recommend?
Re: Baby's first diaper rash? UPDATED: GONE!
I'm not sure when my kids had their 1st diaper rashes but I do think I used Desitin when they did - so probably not as young as 3 weeks since we're with Kaiser too. I've used calendula cream (California Baby) which for both my kids, seemed to make things worse (but both my kids have really sensitive skin). I've also used Baby Butt Paste (can't remember the name exactly - something "Butt Paste") and that has worked ok. But I've still found Desitin to be the best.
I've found though, the best thing is to let the skin get air time. And when mine were newborn we didn't use wipes - just warm water. Hope this helps.
I'd suggest air time.
But if you really want to put something on it I know the NICU used plain white jelly (petroleum jelly) on C's tushie...sounded like they used it pretty routinely on all the newborns there.
My question is, where on the tushie and what does it look like?
We thought EJ had diaper rash when he was little and it turned out to be an allergic reaction.
So if it is focused mostly around the anal opening and really red, you might want to get it checked before you treat it with anything.
I also fully support naked time. We would put EJ on his tummy on a waterproof mat with blankets and do some tummy time while he aired out. We also did warm water rinses instead of wipes. The squeeze bottle they give you at the hospital to clean yourself is the best. I still have mine and we use it for EJ's tushie when it is tender even still (which is rare, but he has some issues with soy and you would be shocked at all the things with soy in them as well as things not labeled having soy that have soy in different forms, ugh!).
Money Matters The other half's blog.
EJ is growing up too fast!
It's more on the cheeks than around the anal opening. Kind of like two thick lines, one on each side...
The peri bottle is a good idea! And we'll definitely give her some air time.
Thanks!

Ditto this.
Oops, I must have been typing when danandkelly posted this- I totally missed it the first time. I'll do that- we're going to give her some tummy time tonight to air it out, so I'll put breast milk on it first.
Thanks for the tips!!

raw coconut oil should do the trick if the BM doesn't.
what essential oils are you adding to the water? some float in a water base and don't dilute.

Thank you- I'm trying BM and open-air time throughout today, hopefully it helps.
I have the bottoms-up baby cloth wipes kit, and the essential oils included are lavender and chamomile. I assume they're safe since they're part of the kit, but I don't know much about essential oils...

We did this. J got one about that age and they told us to dry it really well and put the vaseline on it as a protectant.
Thanks! We'll do that too.

Good to know, I think I'll stop adding them for now. I admit that I'm not even sure what their purpose is on the clean wipes... to keep them smelling nice? Hmm.
