1st Trimester

Spotting and Worrying...

This is my first pregnancy and I am 5 weeks and 4 days along. Yesterday after having a BM I noticed bright red blood, a little in the toilet and the majority on the toilet paper.DH and I also had intercourse less than 24 hours before that happened. Since then I have put a panty liner on and had very small bits of brown blood show up. This morning I had another BM and this time the toilet paper only had a slight tint of brown blood to it, but I am still having spots on my panty liner as well. I don't have my first prenatal appointment for 11 days but I called the doctor this morning and she told me to monitor it for 72 hours and call in if I have heavy cramping or the bleeding gets worse. I know that stressing out isn't helping this situation at all but I am a mess, I feel like crying and breaking down at work! Any encouraging words would be very helpful! Thanks!

Re: Spotting and Worrying...

  • Spotting is very common throughout pregnancy and as your doctor said, monitor it closely.  I know it's hard to stay positive and you should certainly take it seriously BUT you have to stay calm.  If you do any internet research on the matter you will certainly find positive and negative information so try not to do that.  Just wait until you see the doctor and if your spotting gets worse she may move up your appointment.  GL!

  • Oh, I know exactly how you feel!! I started spotting at around 4 1/2 weeks and I was sure something was terribly wrong. I spotted for about 10 days straight, mostly brown blood, but a couple times I did see some red. My doctor told me it's the amount of blood that is really the most important, not the color. I never had anything that would compare to an actual period. We were able to see the baby's heartbeat at about week 5, which really made me feel better! (Definitely ask for an ultrasound!)

I had another bout of bleeding (same kind of thing) from about week 6 to week 7, which stopped a few days ago and I'm crossing my fingers it is gone for good. I'm now in my seventh week and pregnancy symptoms have definitely increased and I have talked to all kinds of people who have experienced spotting in the first tri. So it definitely doesn't necessarily mean something bad but I know how scary it is!!!

  • From what I've read, intercourse can cause mild spotting.  Your cervix is very different than before, can bleed easily.  Try to relax and call the doctor if things get worse.  Good luck to you.
