Moms of 2 or more...Was labor shorter with LO #2?

I keep hearing that labor is about half the time with your second LO than first.  Did you find this to be true?  From the time my water broke to delivery was only 10 hours with DS and I thought that was fast so I'm getting a little nervous with DS #2 coming.  Just curious what happened in your situation.  TIA!

  • I was induced with both. From the time I was induced until the time I had DS #1, it took about 21 hours. With DS #2, it took less than 7 hours.

  • about 7hrs with DS. went by really fast since I had an epi. DD was 2.5 hrs. and we almost didn't make it to the hospital.

  • #1 took 16 hours, 2 hours of pushing

#2 took 7 hours, 10 minutes of pushing

#3 took 20 hours, 40 minutes of pushing.

#1 and #3 were posterior, which made a huge difference in how quickly and smoothly the labors went.

  • #1 I was at the hospital for 15 hrs w.1.5 hrs of pushing

#2 I was at the hospital for 5 hrs (had to wait on Dr for an hour to start pushing, so it could have been more like 4) w. 6 total pushes

Both babies were w.in 1 oz of eachother.

  • #1 had contractions for over 21 hours before he was born (pushed about 90 minutes). he was 7lbs 14oz

#2 my water broke, he was born about 6 hours later with 10 mins of pushing (3 pushes) he was 7lbs 11 oz

"Hello, babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. At the outside, babies, you've got about a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies. God damn it, you've got to be kind." - Kurt Vonnegut

  • Wow this is good to know although I know things can be different and not to set my heart on it. I am hoping the second is a little easier even though I know I can't complain with the first!

  • #1- born at 38wks 2 days, from the moment i had the first contraction, 12 hrs till baby was born, only 6 hrs were actve labor and 45 minutes was pushing.

#2- born at 40wks 5 days, i had to be induced (even after going in to ptl at 26wks and being 4cm 90% for 6wks!) i checked in the hospital and had my water broke at 8am, baby was born 5 hrs later with 3 hrs of it being active labor and 10 minutes of pushing.

  • Yes. My labor progressed too quickly for me to get an epidural with #2. I went from 4cm (I'd been between 3-4 CM for 3 weeks!) to 9.5 in under 20 minutes.  Water broke at 38 weeks 3 days, 9 lbs 1 oz.

My labor with DD was 9 hours total. Water broke at 37 weeks, 5 days, 7 lbs 9 oz.

So if we ever opt for #3, I should probably just move into the hospital a few weeks before my due date. Smile

  • I delivered #1 about 15 hours after my water broke.  I delivered #2 about 6 hour after my water broke.  Yes, labor was much quicker AND more intense the second time around.

  • #1- contractions started 3am went to the hospital at 3 am,  pushed for 15 min and she was born at 7pm

#2- contractions started 6 am didn't ho to the hospital until 7 pm, pushed 3 times and he was born at 2 am.

I pushed less with #2 but was in labor longer. My contractions in the beginning were very inconsistent in the beginning too. My water broke on its own with both when I was dilated to 8 or 9.   Both were born at 38 weeks

  • My labor was 6 hours and I am already worried about #2!  We are planning a home birth so we don't have to worry about getting to the hospital but I am worried that the midwife won't make it.  DH is going to have to be ready to catch!
