Did anyone have a BFN that was actually a BFP?

Just curious, asking for a friend.  She just texted me and said she is several weeks late, but keeps getting negative pregnancy tests.  I told her she should probably call her Dr., but I was just wondering if this happened to anyone and they actually did end up being pregnant?

  • If she's several weeks late I would imagine that it would show up on a pregnancy test by now.  She probably just has a delayed cycle due to stress or something else that is affecting it.  I would still tell her to call the doctor though, maybe she can find some answer as to why she's late.

  • I was always several weeks late and BFNs (until this time, that is). But I also have PCOS and would go 60+ days without AF.

If this is not normal for her, she should probably call her doctor. But a lot of things could be messing with her cycle too.

  • I had two negatives, but I think I may have taken the tests too early. I waited another week and then I got two definite positives and one that was difficult to decipher.
  • Usually a BFN that turns into a positive is because you are testing too early but if she is several weeks late then that would not be the case for her. It can also be a sign of a troubled pregnancy (if she has very low levels of HCG that a test cannot pick up on it could mean she is heading for a miscarriage) I would have her go to the doctor to get a blood test. There are TONS of reasons her period could be late though... stress, change of diet, weight loss, ect. Is she TTC?

No they aren't actively TTC, but they aren't doing anything to prevent it either.  She did just take her vet boards a few weeks ago, so I think that would cause some stress probably!

With my 1st pg I had several BFP at home, went to the doctor did POAS and got a BFN. They ran bloodwork and BFP. I know that some people have medical issues that cause a BFN when it is really a BFP. But my guess is what PP said, a delayed cycle. She should go to the dr for bloodwork if she is concerned.

  • The cycle before we got our BFP I kept getting BFNs even though I was super late. I ended up having a 63 day cycle before I got my period. The next cycle was normal and we got our BFP. I would chalk it up to stress.
  • When I was pregnant with DS, I was late and kept testing BFN, then I finally for a BFP.  I can't recall how late I was, maybe 2 weeks?

  • I did but like a pp stated, it was only a few days not weeks. It turned out I was just testing too early and off on my suspected ovulation/conception date.

  • Unless she knows from charting temps when she ovulated, she isn't "late".

If she is getting BFNs, if there is any HCG in her system, it isn't high enough yet.  My chemical pregnancy I had a BFN at 14 dpo...it wasn't a false negative because the embryo wasn't growing right and my HCG wasn't increasing normally....I didn't get a positive test until about 3.5 weeks after I ovulated and my levels started dropping shortly after that.

  • I have really weird cycles and they range anywhere from 28 days to 50 days.  Each time I was pg it was a long cycle.  I tested for several weeks for getting a bfp.  Of course, I wasn't actually pregnant during those weeks, I just o'ed way later than usual.

  • Only when I started to miscarry (and had BFPs a few days prior).

Does your friend chart? How does she know that she's "several weeks late"?

ETA: I found a great gift for your friend. Hopefully she has a birthday coming up: TCOYF

  • Unless she was charting there is no way she knows if she is late.

Lots of things can interrupt a cycle.  Sounds like she may have Oed late.

  • This actually did happen to a good friend of mine..but her situation was rare. Her HPTs kept coming back BFN so she went to the doctors and took a blood test. That was negative. They told her to continue her BCP. Finally, after several weeks of no period, they gave her an ultrasound. She was 12 weeks along! I know her situation is not the norm, but it is possible for a BFN to really be a BFP.

This. Unless she tests only a few weeks from her last period, negative tests mean NO pregnancy, at least not yet. I had a weird cycle before this pregnancy (chalked it up to PCOS and BFing), and got a positive at 8 weeks from LMP, but that's because the pregnancy didn't actually happen until later. So if she's late and getting negatives, it's because she's not pregnant and something else is holding off the flow.

  • I only got negatives when I tested to early-if I would have just waited till I would have only gotten positives!

    This.

Before actively TTC and charting, I thought I was "late" all the time. My cycles varied anywhere between 28-60+ days. I didn't really understand how my body worked and I was constantly taking pregnancy tests and thinking maybe I had a "false negative."

There are a million reasons she could be "late." Anovulatory cycle, stress, illness, delayed ovulation, etc.

  • Thanks for all the responses ladies!  I asked her and she has no idea when she may (or may not) have ovulated.  She said her cycle is usually a little irregular, but never more than 32 days.  And thanks damambo, I think I really might get her that book.
