Is it worth it?

Hi ladies. I am 35 and have been diagnosed with DOR. I have two children ages 11 & 7. My Dh and I started trying to get pg just over a year ago. First time we tried we got pg and then lost the baby at 10.5 weeks. Due to some financial issues and the emotions from that mc we waited almost a year to try again. we tried once and got pg again then lost yhe baby at 6 weeks. My obgyn wanted me to see a fertility specialist. He discovered that I have mthfr and DOR. His suggestion for the best odds of a successful pg was Ivf, we do not have $12,000. so that is not an option for us. Then he suggested IUI. Our odds are a 30% success rate and it is $1000. That is only 8% more of a chance than trying on our own. He said my varies are like a 42 year old which also increases my chance of having a.child with downs syndrome among other possible disabilities. We do want a child but the odds are not in our favor. We have proved we can get pg on our own....we just have a hard time retaining the pg and it is very emotionally draining. So is it worth the $1000. for just 8% more odds? I need some opinions and thoughts ladies. Thanks.

I'm 26 years old and I was recently diagnosed with DOR. I just did my first iui with injectibles. It's hard to make the decision between iui and ivf. I think with iui, my dr learned how my body responds to the drugs. Are they doing iui with injectibles? If you're oop for the iui, I'm guessing you're oop for the meds too. They can get quite expensive, anywhere from $2,000-5,000.

My RE told me from the beginning that my best chance would be with ivf, but I didn't think that I was mentally and financially prepared for that. My RE said that I have age on my side, so we can try a few iuis and see what happens. I'm not sure if this helps you any, but I just wanted to give you some insight into the choices that I recently made since we both have DOR. Good luck!

Yes, that is with injectables and the $1000.00 is the cost of everything out of pocket. My insurance will not cover any of it at all.

Very hard choice. I hate that any of us have to go this route! Good luck to you whatever you decide. I don't really have any insight for you.

So it's $1,000.00 for the meds and the iui together? If that's right (make sure because that seems really low to me) then you might want to try the iui first and see what happens.

I agree that the $1000 for the iui and injectible meds seems way too low if you are completely OOP. My drugs alone (1500iu of follistim) were $1800. Not trying to second guess you but I don't want you to be surprised (in a bad way). I'm also surprised at the 30% chance of success with IUI? I was told only a 15% chance (also DOR) and 30% with IVF. Sometimes it is confusing with so much info coming out way so you might want to double check that.

I was told 18% with iui, and 30% with ivf.

I agree with everyone else... I have 100% coverage for the IUI procedure and 80% for meds. I paid $800 just for meds. It's good not to be surprised by cost.

Not to be a downer, I agree with PPs that the cost sounds way too low and the odds sound way too high. At our RE, an injectibles IUI is $2500 + the costs of medication. The odds of success with IUI (no DOR issues) is quoted as 6-24%, and the RE noted that it largely brings you up to the odds of an average couple but does not make your chances measurably higher. Good luck whatever you decide!
