New Here..Have a question: Sleeping Arrangements

Aaron is only 4 days old, so I know that sleeping all day is normal.  I wake him to feed/change him and then he usually goes right back to sleep.  Last night was a bad one.  I got up at 1:00 with him to change/feed, and then put him back in the bassinet in our room.  He wimpered, suckled, and whined until about 2:30 when DH got up and fed him again.  He then came back to the bassinet and continued whining, all out crying, and suckling.  At 4:00 I got back up and fed him again.  When I brought him back in he cried for about 15 minutes until DH gave up and brought him in the living room and put him in his My Little Lamb seat....and he slept until 8:00 this morning.  I have a feeling he really hates the bassinet.  Maybe it's not comfortable for him, or maybe he just likes his lamb seat.  Either way, I can't let him sleep in that all night can I?  It just doesn't seem safe at all.  I also can't keep putting him in the bassinet and having him up crying all night long.  DH goes back to work tomorrow, so I'm concerned about how tonight will go.Where does your LO sleep?

  • Tate sleeps next to our bed in this:

He sleeps 3-5 hours at a time at night, and my first DS slept great in it too.  We also swaddle in a Miracle Blanket.

  • we try to keep our baby girl in her pack n play, but there's been a few nights i've caved and let her sleep in her rocker that vibrates and puts her right to sleep...i've heard/read/been told that for the first 3 months, let them sleep however they will sleep because they don't form habits anyways till after that...gl

  • Since K was born he has either slept in his RNP right beside my bed or literally on top of my chest. Those are the only two places he will sleep at night.

During the day he takes naps in his swing.

He wont sleep in his crib at all. Ive tried ....Ive come to conclusion that whatever works is the way to go.

  • Most nights LO sleeps in her pnp basinett, but there has been some nights where she sleeps in her bouncer.

  • The bassinet isn't cozy and warm and doesn't have the constant noise and movement like your uterus did. It sucks.

We have DS in bed with us. If the seat works for your baby, why not let him sleep there next to your bed? At this point, your main objective is to get as much sleep as possible, be it during the night or during the day. If you find a place that works for him and you, take advantage of it!

  • DS sleeps in his arms reach sleeper or (and more often) he sleeps beside me because we've both fallen asleep while nursing. Embarrassed

  • I was totally one of those people who didn't understand why anyone would endanger their child by letting them sleep any way but on their back in a crib.  I didn't even think the bassinet was safe enough.  Now I am the mother of a 2 1/2 week old who screams every time he is put flat on his back...including when he is being changed.  We have survived by having him sleep on our chests and in the RnP.  At this point the bassinet would seem like a miracle for him to sleep in.  I don't necessarily feel comfortable with it but we can't survive with him screaming in his crib half the night and we have been told not to let him cry it out this young.  This is all very overwhelming but people keep saying it will get better, just not sure when.

Isn't if funny to wake up with your boob hanging out and LO fast asleep? :-) Two nights in a row we've slept 5 hours straight. I would take any sleep you can get at this point. I know we might have to break a bad habit later on but he's only this way for a short time.. I will enjoy it. :-)

  • At that age, if you can get LO to sleep anywhere other than your arms and chest, consider that a huge win. If he likes the lamb seat, let him sleep in the lamb seat.

  • DS has always slept in his crib, and we sleep for 7-8 hours. He wont sleep more than 30 min is his pnp or swing, and he has to be in just the right mood to enjoy his bouncy chair.

  • LO hated sleeping on his back.  For the first few weeks we would fall asleep together in the living room on a chair.  I would try to put him in his pnp but he would be awake 5mins later screaming.  Finally I discovered that he would sleep in his bouncer with vibration.  Eventually he even started STTN in his bouncer.  He slept in his bouncer for almost 2 months and I knew he would outgrow it but I didn't even want to try transitioning him to his pnp or crib until he was flipping over.  However, he was getting too big for his bouncer and I wanted to see how he'd sleep on his back.  He's been sleeping for at least 4-5 hour stretches in his pnp for the last few weeks now.  Last night he finally STTN!  Whatever is working for you at this point is what you need to do.  He'll grow out of it and eventually sleep on his back, but right now you both need sleep.

Ditto. I would add that swaddling tight (arms in!) is also key to longer stretches of sleep.

It does get better...that or we just get used to it! My LO has been sleeps on average 2 hours at a time. Naps are usually  an hour. I think he has just started to make a change. He will sleep from 11-2 sometimes 3am.

  • He may just have his days and nights mixed, which is very common. He should figure it out soon. Until then both of sleep wherever and whenever you can. I spent the first two weeks rocking/ napping ds in the living room so dh could sleep. It does get better.
  • My LO has been sleeping in her bassinet since we brought her home from the hospital.  I think the most important thing is for them to feel cradled in some way which is why your LO like the lamb swing.  We swaddle our LO really tight and she sleeps for 3 to 5 hour stretches (normally 3 hours though) during the night.  She slept in the bassinet at the hospital so I didn't see how it would make any kind of difference to her.  She does squirm though and usually ends up with her face pressed into the side of the bassinet, closest to me.  I think it's sweet :)
