Austin Babies

We had a new baby start this week, and he's truly a miracle.

I love him already, after just one day. :)
He was born FOUR MONTHS premature, weighing less than 1.5 lbs. He had brain bleeds at birth that left him with hydrocephaly requiring a shunt from his brain to his torso to drain fluids continuously. He has chronic lung disease, which leaves his cry barely audible. He has mild cerebral palsy so he's physically delayed and keeps one hand balled up tight when he's focused. And he's near-sighted so he wears the most adorable blue glasses. He's almost 2 but gets to be in my class because his gross motor is at about a 7 month old's level. He was SO HAPPY and so social and so easy-going. We had so much fun. Oh, I just adore him!!
I nearly lost it talking to his parents when they were giving me his story.. He is truly a miracle. Such a special little dude. And such proud, doting, happy parents. So glad they were placed with my class!!
That's all.. Just wanted to share that miracles happen. And they're amazing!!

  • It's always a reminder to me to be grateful for what I have when I encounter folks with such serious issues. We have some friends with a baby who has similar medical issues and I am constantly humbled by their positive attitudes and amazing spirits. It's always ao amazing to see people who handle adversity with such grace and strength.
  • DH has a cousin with an eerily similar story and he is an amazing nine year old boy now. This little fighter was also a severe preemie, also had the hydrocephaly, brain surgery, several open heart surgeries, has orthopedic braces on his legs, and is legally blind and deaf. He has to do a lot of therapy and wear these special vests because he has some kind of sensory perception disorder. However, he still manages to read and do math and science at a college level (amazingly, he reads an average of 500 to 600 pages every day). Whenever we see him, I marvel at the fact that people pity him because of his physical problems and outer differences, but they have no idea that he has the most wonderfully rich and happy inner life. The moral of the story is that you just can't ever give up on a child. We've witnessed how absolutely instrumental his teachers were in his development, so as a family member of a special needs child, THANK YOU for what you are doing for this little boy in your class!
