Period Cramps...

Hi Ladies,

I'm not sure how to actually bring this question up, so I am just going to throw it out there-- the last 10 months or so, I have been getting really bad cramps the first day of my period. They have NEVER been this bad. I always thought my friends were being dramatic when they complained about their cramps, but now I can feel their pain. I tried doing some research but I could not find much about cramps getting worse as I got older. I'm only 23 so I'm not sure if this is normal....Has anyone else experienced anything like this before? I rarely ever take medicine, but now I find myself taking something for the pain. Do I just need to put my big girl panties on and suck it up? Stick out tongue

Re: Period Cramps...

  • Pretty much. There can be a number or causes not limited to hormone levels changing, lining being thicker, more active pituitary gland etc to explain why they are getting worse with age. Its not completely abnormal and probably nothing to worry about. Different birth control pills can do different things as well due to hormone levels etc so depending on what you are using etc. you may want to bring it up at your next GYN visit.

Until then: heating pad and Midol (though mine have been bad enough with blood clots that I was given Oxycodine and on one trip to the hospital MORPHINE to deal with the pain.) GL.

  • I don't miss that one bit.  I haven't had a period in over a year thanks to the Mirena.  I think I'll have a serious cry if/when it comes back.

  • File cramps under why it sucks to be a woman sometimes. BC helps for some people, it definitely made my cramps a little less painful but it gave me migraines, bloating, and zits. So, I'm not sure it was a fair trade. I still get horrible back cramping. Take some Alieve and hang out with a heating pad.

  • I had horrible cramps like that when I was your age. I'd get lightheaded, sweaty, clammy, nauseous, and all around just unable to function on the day my period started. I could never get a diagnosis from a doctor because I was never experiencing the symptoms when I saw them and I think they just chalked them up to regular menstrual cramps. The best advice I got was to take a regimen of Aleve in the days leading up to my period, one in the morning and one at night and then two in the morning and two at night the day before and the day of (easier said than done when your period s are irregular and you're not charting). It did help though and I seemed to grow out of it around 25. My periods also got more predictable as well, go figure.
