Cloth Diapering

Ever met someone who disliked CD'ing?

I am all for Cloth Diapering and so excited about it. I'm sure I will love it.

DH comes home from work last night and tells me he was talking to a lady there who tried it for a while and she said she stopped because she really disliked it. Way to encourage my already apprehensive husband lady.

Then today at my shower I got grief on how I'm not going to keep up with it and just switch over after a while. Of course all from people who know nothing about it other than "it's just gross". Um no. I wouldn't have invested this money into it if I wasn't 100% comitted to following through. Ignorance. I felt like it would have been a waste of breath and effort to try to sway their opinion so I didn't even bother. I love my friends but I was not in the mood to preach.

I told DH last night that I have yet to talk to a CD'ing Mom, on here or IRL who has actually done it and disliked it and that most who have tried rave about it.

So, out of curiousity. Anyone ever met anyone who had actually CD'ed and disliked it?

  • My mom way back when...Wink

But, nope, I don't really know anyone that does CD. My SIL CDs and loves it also.

  • I met a mom recently that hated CDing. I dug it out of her that she was using Gerber prefolds, which really explained why she hated it. I'm trying to convince her to try again with better prefolds.

I discovered that I HATED stuffing pocket diapers, and pockets were what I was completely sure I would love.  My hatred of stuffing pockets (all we started our stash with) coupled with my hatred of dealing with PB poo while coping with morning sickness caused me to stop CDing for a very long time.  We're back at it now and have changed up our stash and I feel a lot better about it.

That's what I was thinking.  I don't think my mom really hated it, though, just felt resigned to it (she used flats and pins on my older brother, and tells me she kept thinking, "There must be a better way!"  And now there is).

  • I personally don't love it, but am going to stick with it since we have spent all this money.
  • i had a hard time at first because of stink/amonia issues i nearly gave up. but actually having the grobaby disposable inserts kept me in the game until i figured out what was wrong with my cloth inserts.

i fell out of cd'ing when i was having ms with this one. i just couldn't handle the smells or much of anything at that point. washing was too much effort etc...

so i can't say i've disliked it totally, but i've had some challenges that made me question what i was doing...

i honestly don't see it as gross. it might be a weird way to look at it but they're my kids, and i would do anything for them, and that includes having to deal with poopy situations. and actually it's been a lot less gross because we've had no blowouts since using cd's. i think a disposable blowout is worse then plopping poo down the toilet.

  • I hated lots of different kinds we tried.  I do NOT like stuffing pockets at all.  We only have a few pockets (BG's) and I use my Best Bottom inserts in them.  I pretty much lay my Best Bottom inserts in every single dipe I use...Econobums, Flips, Best Bottoms, and BG's.  They make for a really trim and absorbent fit.  But I would easily quit if I had to stuff pockets full time...I know some people don't mind, but I did not care for it at all.
  • I honestly do not enjoy it which is why Im selling now. Its gotten to be to much work since I dont really have help with the washing, With LO, and with all the other house work. It was also raising our electricity and water bill, Im guessing the place we live in now charges alot per KWH because our bill has more than doubled.

  • I have a friend who CDed (but only used g-diapers) and hated it and switched by the time her baby was a year old.

I don't know if they ever tried anything besides g-diapers. I don't think they did, since we met up with them for breakfast today and she was asking me a lot of questions about pocket diapers.

I know another mom who CD'ed her son eighteen years ago and only used prefolds (she had a free diapering service). Even with the service, she hated it, and switched to disposables once she could afford it.

That being said, I have never met anyone who used pocket, fitted, AIO, etc. cloth diapers and hated it. I've heard nothing but rave reviews for this kind of CD'ing!

  • Hey April!  I haven't seen you since The Knot!  Congrats on your pregnancy:)   We are using CD's love them!  Everyone I know that uses them loves them too.  Haven't met anyone who doesn't.
  • We started hating it because we had constant leaks.  It turned out to be user error.  I'm glad we didn't give up on cloth because I love it and have convinced tons of friends to do it.

  • I think I would like it more if I had a better stash. Before LO was born I didn't want to spend too much money so I bought two dozen PFs, four fitteds, some fleece liners, and five Thirsties covers. I didn't realize my LO's clothes wouldn't fit properly, I hate dealing with covers, and my son is such a heavy wetter that he pees oh, every ten minutes and is MISERABLE in a PF since it doesn't have a stay dry inner. So now I am shelling out more money to build an entire stash of OS pockets while using sposies at night. I think once I have finished my stash and I feel comfortable using CDs at night, I'll realize the cash savings. But at this very moment, with the pocket and sposie purchases and rising water bills, it seems like a money pit. :(

whoa, that sounds a little out of the ordinary...

are the appliances the same as you had before or older?

are you washing at a different time of day than before?

    just curious...

  • I have zero friends who CD, but I keep having friends tell me "ohhh don't buy TOO many because you'll just end up getting sick of it and use sposies anyway". It's driving me nuts...I am determined to make cloth work and not even thinking of using sposies as an option. I'll only use them when absolutely necessary (camping, etc). It drives me CRAZY...but I explain my feelings and deal with it..or just smile and nod if I don't feel like getting into it. Just drives me crazy that everyone thinks they know sooo much..especially when they've never tried it.

  • I know people who had to give up because of extenuating circumstances, but none that gave up because they've hated it.

I find it to be easy.  Just as easy as using disposables.

  • Most people I've talked to have been really supportive.  At my shower my family threw for me, my Grandma and her friends were very supportive.  They said I was being very environmentally responsible and that more people should cloth diaper- especially with how easy they are now.

My SIL did tell me she thought I was brave for doing it- she's got 4 kids- 2 in disposables right now.  Can you imagine how much money they've spent on diapers and how much they've thrown in the garbage? She's a SAHM, too.  It would be so easy for her to do it.

My aunt told me she didn't think I would stick with it, but she commended me for doing it.

Same here. And, to me, it's less gross than sposies. All the poop goes down the toilet (and then, if I need to, I scrub out any "remainder" with a cloth wipe in the sink, so as to avoid stains - I don't even have to touch any poop with my bare hands to do this). To me, it's way yuckier to have a bin full of poopy trash filling up and sitting around.

  • I only know a few people IRL who CD. One quit pretty early on. She was using gerber prefolds. I actually loaned her my nb stash when her 3rd son was born recently, but I'm not sure how it's going. Another friend's son had digestive problems that made CDing really difficult for her and she gave it up.

I got a lot of discouraging comments while I was pregnant from people who have never CDed and thought it was all prefolds, pins and plastic pants. It made me even more determined to CD and stick to it.

  • No I have not.  Everyone I know IRL who CDs loves it.  The nay-sayers are typically people who have zero experience with CDs.  How annoying that some lady was being negative about it to your H.  My H would have taken that to heart b/c he was apprehensive about CDing while I was pregnant, too.

  • I think I will have the mindset too that I'm not giving up. I really am excited about it. If I have to adjust systems then I'll just do that. Good input!

I know i was determined for it to work because everybody was so negative about it and it has worked. We have less blowouts with CD. i love the pockets
