Home Party Businesses can suck it (vent)

Someone that I barely talk to anymore just sent me an invite on facebook to come over this weekend for wine and apps. Why? Because she just started selling for Lia Sophia--high quality jewelry that's totally affordable! Yeah, well suck it.

I remember the women in my family being pressured by various colleagues and friends of friends to buy from Mary Kay and other companies while in the comfort of someone's home. The idea just rubs me the wrong way, and if I get invited to one more of these stupid parties, I'm deleting her from my fb. If I want to buy something, I'll go to the store or order it offline. I'm all about helping out small business owners and original products (for example, my aunt makes blown glass art), but I don't have the patience to help multi-million dollar corporations in someone's living room. Ah, vent!

  • I just got invited to a Silpada jewelry party by a FB friend... I didn't know if I should go or not, but you make me feel like not going!! I hate feeling like I HAVE to buy something.

I actually went to a purse party once and got out without buying anything there... I don't see the point in buying knock-offs that cost the same as the real thing would cost in an outlet store. And I love outlet stores!

  • Ooh, purse parties Angry . I went to a 31 party once just to play Bunco :) After trying to be polite about it for 5 rounds of Bunco, I finally told the lady that I wasn't going to buy anything because I could make my own purse and it would be just as good...but that if I won the Bunco game I'd take the freebie she was offering as a prize Big Smile

I sell Avon, but I don't have parties. That's probably why I'm not a millionaire like all those ladies on the commercials, but I just don't feel comfortable harassing people into buying. I like some of the products and if someone asks (where did you get that dress/makeup/jewelry/etc..) I'll tell them, and mention that I sell if if they're interested, but unless someone asks me to do a party for them I'm not going to do it. I'm probably not the best sales person, either, because I won't even mention the products that look handmade (why buy it if you can make it???) or that you can get a better deal on at Wal Mart.

  • Ugh.  I have two people hitting me up for these parties from their WORK EMAIL.  One of them, I only know her on a work level (we're in a professional society together).  I kind of want to tattle on them.  So unprofessional.

If it's a Pampered Chef or Mary Kay party I'll go because I like the products, but otherwise, no thanks.  I do not want your cheap jewelry or pocketbooks.

Oh, and get this.  At the last Pampered Chef party I went to, I got accused of stealing some recipe cards!  I had both the host and the rep calling me saying that I was the last person seen with them.  Uh, look, my husband and I make 20 times what you make at your piddly little pyramid scheme job.  I didn't buy the cards because the recipes sucked.  I sure as shiit am not going to steal them.

  • I was invited to a birthday party that ended up being a birthday/Candlelite party! WTF? I was so confused? Was I supposed to bu her a $20 candle for her birthday? It was so wrong...

    OMG.

When I was engaged I went to a bridal show and some Pampered Chef reps were there trying to pitch Pampered Chef BRIDAL SHOWERS.  So I guess you were supposed to 1) throw your own shower, 2) have it be Pampered Chef, 3) register for a bunch of PC stuff, and 4) pressure your guests into buying it for you.  Sounds like a blast.  Huh?

  • The only home business parties I would have would be FUN parties! I can't stand the others.

DH and I are wedding photogs on the weekends, and almost every bridal show we have participated in has some kind of Pampered Chef/Mary Kay/PartyLite representative. I'm always appalled at the notion of this! Pampered Chef wants you to make a registry with them, Mary Kay wants to do your makeup for your big day, and really, who can afford to do all their centerpeices through PartyLight Candles. Overpriced garbage, IMO.

  • I ALWAYS delete the evites. I don't even respond and make up a reason I can't go. I want them to get the picture. I don't know if they do, though, because I just get invited again and again. UGH!!

  • In my misspent youth I was a Mary Kay lady...big time. I even had the car. I did try very hard not to ambush people with the parties, but I am sure it happend...

Why did I quit? Because it was sooo much pressure! I got called in for a meeting with my director because somebody had seen me at the hardware store at 7:30 am on a Sunday with NO makeup on, and didn't I know that I was the "face" of my business and I needed to look perfect all the time? After I quit they put so much pressure on me to try and get me back I was having panic attacks.

  • I hate these home parties, and I sell Scentsy even. I have never had a home party for it either. It's like a forced party....no thanks.

I don't even blast it all over FB that I sell it either. I can't stand those that do that. I have made maybe 3 posts about it in the past 6 months, and it's only to let people get in on my free shipping deal.

People who sell things like this don't understand that they are pushing customers away by shoving it down their throats. I have done pretty well in my business, and not once did I spam people about it.

That is insane.  You should post this story on pinktruth.com if you haven't already.  Our Mary Kay rep was recruiting my mom and I hardcore and so I did a little research on my own.  I used to lurk the Pink Truth message boards fairly frequently.  The stuff over there . . . wow.  It amazes me that they can get anyone to sell for them.

  • That sucks :(  I had a girlfriend once invite me over for a wine & cheese party without telling me she had started selling this clothing line (similar party-type concept).  I got there and was shocked to find it was a selling party.  UGH.  I left right after a glass of wine and didn't stay for the clothes part.

  • It's nothig but overpriced crap. And the worst is when the hostess doesn't even have a party -- they just want you to order crap so that they get free items. WTF, at least give me a snack and a glass of wine! I effing hate home parties.
