Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

15 month old nap issues....ARGH!!!!!!

Okay, I don't know what's going on!  Georgia's naps are shrinking FAST, and I have no idea why.  She's not getting enough sleep because she's obviously still tired, but for some reason she is waking up crying and cannot / will not go back to sleep.

Two days ago, she napped for 1/2 hr!!!!!  Yesterday, she didn't nap at all!!!!!!  Today was a pretty average (these days) 45 minutes.

Isn't that WAAAYYY too short for 15 months?

IDK....she cries when I first put her down....at bedtime too.  She hasn't done this in months.

What can you do for a baby who is tired, but who cannot / will not sleep enough?

I put her to bed earlier, but she doesn't sleep through the night either.....so she's only getting 12 hrs total sleep in 24.

  • This is exactly what mine is doing right now.  It is killing me.  I think she is going through a growth spurt or something but man I am exhausted!

  • Well, good to know I'm not alone!!  I NEED nap time for my own sanity LOL.

    IDK, I hope it's a passing phase.....

  •  What are you doing to stimulate her? I know for DS, if he doesn't get much exercise or stimulation prior to nap time, he often doesn't nap much, almost out fo boredom.

  • Is it time to transition to one nap early afternoon?
  • My DD is 15mo and just switched last week to one nap. She seems cranky all the time sleeps 11-12hrs at night and takes one nap either at 9:30 or 11:30 but is exhausted by the time she goes to bed at 7. However putting her down early/later doesnt do anything so I think she just has to adjust to the new one nap and will sleep longer. Today she napped 1hr15min where as when she started about a week ago she only napped 30mins or none at all. I think give it time and watch for signs when she's tired so she doesnt get overtired.

  • Is she keeping the same routine, or has anything changed lately? My DD went through this same phase this past Friday-Monday. My sister was in town and stayed with us, so we were out and about, and DD's routine wasn't kept. She napped for 20-30 min only each day, but kept the same sleep schedule at night. Now that we are back to her typical routine, she's been back to her normal 2 hour naps.

I agree with what a PP said about exercise....I've noticed if my DD hasn't been as active during the day, she has too much energy to fall asleep at her normal nap time.

  • Your not alone...my DD wakes early 5:45-6:15 everyday is different with naps too.  She's been down to 1 nap for a month now and her naps are either 45min-1hr 15min. ....nothing longer but STTN from 11-12hrs.  I have to accept the fact that I don't have a long napper on my hands.  I hate having her going to bed early too around 6...but since she's up for too long during the day with short naps there's nothing else I can do.  And yes, my DD has recently started to cry on put downs for naps/bedtime...with each day its getting better but still cries!
  • I think that 12 hours of sleep is actually pretty typical for toddlers this age.  At least that's what my pediatrician says.  My DD only sleeps 9- 9 1/2 hours at night and then takes a 2 1/2 hour nap.  If they are getting enough sleep at night they won't sleep much during the day.

I'm pretty sure that's what Ferber says too- that 11-13 hours total sleep is normal at this age, and that most people just expect their kid to sleep way longer than reasonable.
