How would you rate your parents' taste in names?

Re: How would you rate your parents' taste in names?

  • I have four brothers and two sisters and with the exception of my fn (Amy) we all have either family names or saint names for first and middle names. I think for the most part they did pretty good. Not terribly adventurous, but safe.

  • They stuck with all J names. They say it was by accident, but knew they had to name me a J name as well based on the others. I was a "last thought" baby.

  • My parents steered clear of anything trendy and used family names as middle names for my brother and me.

My mom and I are on the same page as far as spelling?we stick to the traditional, and can't stand "made up" spellings. However, a lot of the names that I've come to love, she considers to be "so old lady" (Evelyn, Judith, Lillian, etc). But I know that's to be expected.

  • I don't like my unusual name. My mom and I do not have a similar naming style...my girls are Hannah and Emily. My name was going to be January. WTF mom?

  • I guess ok since they didn't name us anything totally weird.  My oldest brother is Andrew Christopher and my middle brother is Christien Douglas.  Angus was tossed around for them, as well as Daniel (which I would have been if I had been a boy).  For me, I got screwed.  They loved Katherine Taylor, and then my mom liked Rosemary (NMS at all), they went back to KT, and then I was born and they named me Susan Nell.  Ugh, I HATE my name and always have.  I dropped my mn and picked up my maiden when I got married.
  • I think my parents have pretty good taste, our names in order are Melissa Jane (Jane is a family name), Shannon Elizabeth( thats me), Stephen Jeffrey (Jeffrey is my dad's name), and Lora Catherine (Lora was my great grandmothers name and I love the spelling of it, its pronounced like Laura).

The funny thing though is that my dad loves nicknames so growing up we were hardly ever called by our real names. My older sister was Pumpkin or Mimi (my brother couldn't pronounce Missy, only Mimi so it stuck). I was and still am to this day either Peanut or Elizabeth, My brother was Spud Bucket (no idea why haha), and my little sister was Wawa (again my brother couldn't pronounce Lora, he was born with a cleft lip and palette).

  • I give my parents' naming style an A-. I love my name, but I feel like mine and my sister's names don't mesh well. I'm Brooke, she's Megan. My name has never been above #52 (I think, don't quote me, but I'm close), and my sister was #10 the year she was born. I just have always found it odd that I have a relatively uncommon name - I've only met 3 others in my life - and my sister had to be Megan Lastinitial all through school. I think they're beautiful names, but I like consistency with names.

  • My parents were hippies and named my 2 borothers and I unusual names for the time.

    Jesse Mullen (b. 1975)

    Marissa Erin (b. 1977)

    Paul Francis (b. 1981)

Both Jesse and I did not have anyone else with our name in our schools from k-12 grade.

  • I think my name's pretty, and also pretty much a classic- except for the spelling of my first name.  I'm an only kid though, so I really can't say if they had a certain naming style or not.

  • My parents did pretty good.  I am Lauren, which was pretty popular in the early 80s.  There have always been plenty of other Laurens around but I'd rather have that than some crazy name.  My brother is John.

  • I absolutely hate my mother's choice in names. She has three daughters; Samantha Lynn (me), Jordan Taylor, and Andrianna (On-dree-on-ah) Uriel (Yer-ee-el). I think Jordan was the luckiest even though she got stuck with a boy's name, but poor Andrianna. She couldn't spell her own name until second grade, not to mention every one mispronounces it or spells it completely wrong. She almost always goes by her nickname, Onnie. I hate mine just because it was always so popular and it kind of has a redneck flair with my last name.

  • There kids are named:

    Brittney Nicole

    Hannah Taylor

    Cassandra Jean

    Hailey Jo

    Sean Phillip

    Seth Robert

I would say they're all okay names, but definitely on the trendy/popular side (especially the girl names). Not my naming style. I LOVE Sean Phillip though. He lucked out and got a great name. :)

  • My brother & I have more classic names: Jacqueline & Joseph whereas my sister's is kind of youneek- Jeanna (Gina). Had my sister or I been a boy we would have been Joseph after my father, and if my brother was a girl he would have been either Jessica or Julianne.

My mom and I have different tastes in naming now. She kept pushing "Anna" since it's my great grandmother's name and she likes it. Obviously, it didn't work as my girls are Moira Ann (Ann is my MN) and Maeve Kathleen (Kathleen is for my friend who passed from cancer though my MIL thinks its' for her since she's Kathleen too!)

  • I don?t like my name but I like my younger sister Dana

I wouldn?t say my style is simular to my parents at all

  • Too good because they stole my favorite girls name for my sister! I really like my name also
  • Decent. I like my name. Normal, yet not very common. (My name, Meredith, was number 141 the year I was born, I think.) My brother had a super common name (Matthew), though. And my parents LOVE alliteration. Both our middle names are family names - mine is Mae, after my great-great grandmother, my brother's is John, after our dad and grandfather. I'd like to continue that style.

I don't mind alliteration. And my husband and I both grew up with normal-yet-not-popular names, so I do kind of lean toward that style. Like, it annoys me when my favorite names break the top 50.

    Names my dad liked:

    Penelope

    Names my mom liked:

    Shauna/Shawna Milane

    Maura

    Jillian

If my brother had been a girl he would have been Jessie Elizabeth

  • My parents liked pretty classic names:

    I'm Julianne Marie (nn Julie)

Sister #1: Elizabeth Jane (nn Libby)

    Sister #2: Emily Catherine

My mom said she thought about naming me Colleen. I'm glad she stuck with her first choice.
