Pregnant after a Loss

Induction drama

I had my first NST yesterday. The OB said it was a great strip and the baby is looking fantastic.

The u/s estimates him at 8 lbs and 9 oz (which is a little big!) with a head circumference of 14 inches. He's definitely put on some weight since the last u/s. Probably all that halloween candy.

They wanted to schedule me to be admitted Sunday night for an induction for Monday but the hospital said they aren't accepting any more scheduled inductions until Thursday. My OB doesn't want me to go that long over due because of the baby's size.  If he gets too big, they will want to scedule a c-section instead.

So the office manager told me to go to the hospital Sunday night and tell them I'm over due and haven't felt the baby move for a while.

They'll run a NST and tell me everything is okay and then call my OB. At that point he's supposed to tell them to keep me and start an induction.

DH and I both really uncomfortable with lying to the L&D nurses.

One, I've lost two babies. I don't like saying something is wrong with this one!

Two, if I lie, it's going to be pretty apparent if the baby has a great NST like today's. Then the nurse is going to know something fishy is going on and treat us like crap. I'm sure this is a common practice that OB's use to get their patients in the hospital door.

Re: Induction drama

  • I'm sorry, I wouldn't be happy if the doctor put me in that position either.  Can you just tell them that you are uncomfortable with that?  There has to be another way!

Sorry- I wish I had some better advice.... but I will be thinking of you!

  • can't your OB just work it out with the hospital?  i'd be uncomfortable lying about that too.
  • Oh my.... I wouldn't feel comfortable lying, either.  I am praying Patches just comes on his own so soon so you don't have to deal with this.
  • I wouldn't feel comfortable doing that either.  I guess I would suggest trying all the tricks to get labor started on your own until then!
  • I'm going to acupuncture again today.  I've been going on long walks.  Using the pressure points to start labor.  We're having sex every day.

I'm just about ready to move on to nipple stimulation.  Embarrassed

  • That would make me uncomfortable, too. And just remember, they can be poundS off, and it would make the induction and c/s completely unnecessary. I had a c/s and am trying to avoid one at all costs for the next one because I hated it soooo much. You CAN deliver big babies (even 10/11 pound ones) vaginally.

  • oh - and another thing - you can safely go to 42 weeks as long as there is enough amniotic fluid & there are no other factors (high bp, gd, etc.)
  • I don't think I could do that either :( How weird of your doctor. If the baby's doing well I wouldn't stress too much about size unless they were talking 10-pounder or something wild since the estimates can be off.?
  • Well, unless you really want to be induced, I would seriously press your doctor on how accurate he or she thinks that weight prediction is, because   I can't tell you how many stories I have heard/read where the doctor gets a woman all panicked that her baby is 8 or 9lbs, talks her into being induced, and then the baby turns out to be closer to a normal 7lbs.  Ultrasound is notoriously inaccurate for predicting these things.

I wish doctors would stop trying to control the birth process and let women's bodies work they way they are intended to.

  • That sucks.  I would have a hard time lying about something like that too.

  • I wouldn't lie to the nurses either!  And I definitely agree with the pp - they can be way off on the weight.  Everyone kept telling me I was having a small baby, even when I was in labor they were saying 7 1/2 lbs.  Yeah, she was nearly 9lbs!

In any case, I'd try drinking lots of raspberry leaf tea (I swear that's what put me into labor!) in addition to the walking/sex/etc.  My midwife had also suggested evening primrose oil (I think she said 500mg 3 times a day, but my memory is a little fuzzy), but I couldn't find it in the store.

    Good luck!!

  • Ditto Skatcat and Meant2Be on the pounds issue.  They can be so off and what makes the dr think you can't deliver the child naturally?  Grrr, sometimes it makes me so mad when I hear all the drs pushing induction just to hear later that the women had to have a c/s.  Frankly, you are probably at higher risk for a c/s if you get induced before the baby is ready, then you would be having a baby 9-10 lbs!  I am with you on not wanting to lie to the nurses.  I hope your little one comes on its own!

  • I don't think they should have asked you to do their dirty work. I am scheduled to go in Sunday night too. I have to call before I go and make sure they still have space for me. If not, I get bumped to later since I am not actively in labor.

Your hospital must already have too many people on the waiting list for Sunday. I would not just want to schedule a c/s. I also would not want to be induced when they have a totally full house. Can you ask to go in Monday night?
