New dresser smells of fumes?!?

Hello -My Aunt recently bought our daughter a new dresser from JCPenney.  My husband put it together & I noticed a strong smell of fumes in the drawers.  I added her clothes thinking it might not be as bad as I thought.  The next day I took a onesie out and it reeked of this chemical smelll.  Everything went into the wash.

Is there anyway to safely remove the fumes?  Or do we have to take the thing apart and take it back?

Does anyone know a good source of safe furniture?

Thanks

  • Yikes.

You could let it offgas outside for a week or so, if you don't want to take it back.  MIC, I assume?

  • Yes, this high quality piece of you-know-what was made in China.  I'll definitely pay closer attention next time.

BTW - Sorry for the funny font size - tried to post using my phone.

  • We got a dresser at Ikea for H's room, it took a good six weeks or so before the smell went away :-(   So, I guess it's kinda normal.

  • Akk!  Get rid of those VOC's!!!  Burning a candle can help neutralize the air.  Open the windows and use a fan to keep the air moving out of the house!  My favorite way to naturally get rid of the chemicals is with a Peace Lily or Spider Plant!  I've also heard that cutting up an onion will work to absorb the odors and gases in the air.
