GTKY s/o: The WORST job you've ever had?

Mine is easy. I had a summer job working at a dry cleaners when I was 15. It very much had zero air conditioning and I'm sure you can imagine how sweltering it was in there with those machines running all the time. And I had to touch peoples' disgusting clothing all the time. I think that's the point in my life that I became germphobic.

How about you ladies?

My worst job was when I worked for a temp agency.  I wasn't a temp, but I staffed day labor jobs. Sending people out to a construction site at 5am = not my cup of tea.

  • Same as the one I posted in the "first job" thread below:

Errand b!tch at my mom's company (this was a trucking company) when I was 16.  My tasks ranged anywhere from typing forms, filing papers, delivering lunch, shrink-wrapping incoming orders, and painting garbage cans.

The painting of garbage cans was brutal.  We basically went from house to house riding on the back of a pickup truck in the middle of summer, spray-painting addresses on the garbage cans.  I grew up in Hawaii and the summer sun there is really strong.  Needless to say, I was extremely tanned that summer.

  • My first job out of college. I was an English major, so still deciding what to do as a "career" (I am now in publishing). Anyway I got a job at a law firm, in the collections department. It was HORRIBLE. The other lady who worked there was super territorial and was horribly mean to me. I actually went to my car and cried on my lunch break a few times.

  • When I started in nursing school, I quit my full time executive position and took a part time job at Target. The first day I trained on a register, that was fine. But I was hired to work at 4am two days a week setting up displays and changing around items on shelves according to schematics. Other than sorking at 4am, the people were awful to work with and the job sucked. I didn't go back after that.

  • Oh man- that's easy!

I was a Psych tech for our Hospital's locked Behavioral Health Unit. I worked 3-12's. It was nights too. I was over qualified, and just needed a job. I hated the condescending nurses and the hours. I would literally have a nervous breakdown every day before I would have to go in!! By the end- I was taking all the 1-1's so I could just sit and read while I watched the patients sleep...

I am so glad I got out of that hell-hole!

  • It's a toss-up for me...

I waitressed for a month and it was awful.  I sucked at it so much.  And I had to wear this awful fraulein outfit, complete with short skirt.  But, my boss and coworkers were nice, atmosphere and most of the customers were nice.

I worked at a vet clinic for 10 months.  I loved my work and my clients.  But good god, the work environment was so toxic.  Boss, manager, co-workers....catty gossipy back-stabbing two-faced bitches (I know this because I was the one everyone would come to talk to about everyone else! Seeing the way they treated each other behind their backs, I have no doubt that they turned right around and did the same about me too...).

And the manager and lead tech were giving themselves and everyone else a 50% employee discount behind the owner's back!!  To this day I wish I had gone straight to the owner, told him what was going on, and walked out.  But I loved my work so much, and was so desperate for a job and the money and work experience, that I stuck around for way longer than I should have.

My last job at a CPA firm.  It was my first job out of school and I worked there for 4 years.  The atmosphere was horrible -  it was mostly men working there and they had no respect, at all.  I couldn't even tell you how many times I went home and cried to DH after work.  I was miserable there - the day I walked out, it was like a huge weight was lifted off of my back!!

  • Wendy's when I was 16.  The place was disgusting, the food was disgusting, the people were disgusting.

A creepy guy old enough to be my dad that I worked with decided we should date and began semi-stalking me (like finding out where I'd be outside of work and showing up everywhere I went).  I quit after 1 month.  Eventually one of my guy friends had to threaten the guy to get him to leave me alone.

  • I think I might be in it now.  All my other crappy jobs were little, teenage jobs that were easy, do-it-and-go-home jobs.

I'm 5 years in with a company now and when I left on mat leave last April, I was a department manager, Monday to Friday, 9-5 and so flexible that I could take a day off whenever I needed to.  I work from home, can leave for an hour or two whenever I needed, worked with Owners of multi-million dollar homes, and helped develop a new website for our company.

Now I'm back, my department has been melded with all other departments and there are no more department managers, just one GM.  They've trained everyone on taking reservations which means my flexibility in my shifts is gone.  The new website is now live but there's a million bugs that I can't do anything about.  And the lovely Owners that I work with are now pissed off about this vomit pile we call a website.  So, I think this is the worst job I've ever had.....at least it's the one that made me the most miserable.

  • My second career job was awful. My boss was a micro-managing freak that spoke on volume 1 of 10 all the time. I HATED asking her to repeat herself all the time. The only good thing that came out of it was Dh - I met him at the co-ed baby shower of one of my former coworkers.

I also really hated bagging groceries. I have mad compassion for people that bag my groceries now, because that job sucked.

  • My first job in DC hands down. The person I went to work for (she was the reason I took the job) left two days before I started. I was quickly given her job which was ridiculous given my experience and the workload. By the time I got there I was 1 of 5 people. Within two week I was 1 of 4 and had the 2nd longest tenure. I started looking for something pretty much the day I started. People quitting/forced to resign was a  daily occurrence. As were new hires -- I always felt bad for them and really drug my feet on hiring for my department. The place stressed me out so much I spent half my time sick and got to the point of coughing up blood.

I was forced to resign after two months due to "my excessive sick days" and then the next day I got an amazing offer at a new job which I worked for for 5 years.

Much love to all of my magical ladies.

  • Oh, I forgot working in the lingerie department of a department store. And it wasn't the kind of young hip lingerie that anyone younger than about 50 or so shopped for. That was bad, especially when my kindergarten teacher came in one day and needed to be sized. Thankfully, I graduated from high school not long after and moved away for college.

The youngest kids were about 3 and if they cried when they left their parents the directors would be really sweet while the parents were there, but as soon as they left the kids would get put on "the crying bench" until they were done. ?Some kids sat there for hours.

  • I was hired as an event coordinator at a country club but placed on the floor of the dining room as the position was not yet vacant.  Apparently, the person I was hired to replace was pregnant and had not even finalized her maternity leave nor had she decided whether or not she would be returning to work.  There was practically a whole family of siblings that worked there (including one in the events office), and it got back to this poor girl that I was there to oust her.  She was incredibly upset (as I would be, too), and her and her friend came and approached me and made a huge scene my second day of work.

I quit that day.  I didn't want to work for a company that didn't seem to have regard for it's employees and was full of DRAMA.

  • The worst job I ever had was a seasonal position at Kohl's...but I don't count that as a real job.

My REAL worst job was doing home-based case management for a company contracted with the Department of Children and Families.  It was heartbreaking, thankless work that only got worse during the budget crisis.  My caseload shot up to almost 20 kids.  To top it off, we got a new director who is the worst micro-manager that ever lived.  So, yeah.  I had a career change.
