I have a dentist appointment tomorrow, and I'm sick to my stomach

about it.  I am absolutly terrified of the dentist.  I'd rather have another Arteriogram.  (worst expreience ever, when I was dx'd with MS, they first thought I was having a stroke)

I've put off the dentist for a while, I've had a toothach for a month, the stress about going to the dentist has contributed to this flare-up I'm having now.  I have to get my tooth fixed so then I can go to the hospital to start my IV Steroids....  I am watching the clock now thinking to my self, I will be there in 12 hours.  Freaking out here!  Sorry, my posts are so stinking whiney and really pointless.

Re: I have a dentist appointment tomorrow, and I'm sick to my stomach

  • Have you ever tried sedation dentistry?

ETA: The sedation dentist was the only way I got my dh to the dentist at all when we first got married. He had major dental anxiety but has since managed to pretty much completely overcome it.

Also, many of my clients have severe anxiety relating to medical appointments and their doctor will usually prescribe some Ativan, Xanax, Valium, etc. to be taken an hour or two before any appointment. Is that something that you think your dentist would be open to considering?

    Good luck!

  • Can you do nitrous oxide? Or valium? I swear people here must think I'm a pill popper but I will not go to the dentist ever again without a valium. I just took one last week to get my teeth cleaned! I hate the dentist and it's not worth the panic attacks that last for days afterward to go without some sedation!
  • Our dentist will prescribe valium to take before coming in. Do you happen to have any or anything like it to take before?

  • who prescribes the valium?  I need something, but I doubt I'll get anything before tomorrow.  :(

     no I don't have anything,

  • The dentist. Call as soon as they open. I've forgotten to get my prescription and called at 8:30 and they call it in. The pharmacy won't even fill it until day of, and they always have it ready for me (I always get morning appts).

That said, for valium, you need someone to drive you home. I'm usually out for a few hours. Nitrous oxide works when they turn it on, and quits working when they turn it off so there are no after-effects. I have never had it so I don't know if it works as well.

Taking valium means that the day before my appt I'm not completely freaking out...I still get nervous, but not panic-attack-worthy.

  • The dentist would prescribe it (if he/she will). Could you call the office to see if there is an answering service? Maybe, just maybe there is and maybe he/she will call something in? If not, maybe you should try rescheduling if they can prescribe something?

What time is your appointment? If nothing can be done tonight, try calling first thing in the morning.

    GL!

  • I'm so sorry you hate the dentist! I know so many people who are terrified!  I def would look into the sedation...I'm a big fan of the laughing gas!!

  • I went last week for the first time in far too long and I was TERRIFIED.  I will be honest that it wasn't pleasant, BUT it was far less awful than I expected it to be.  And I forgot to take my Loraxepam beforehand, so I expected to be hyperventilating with the anxiety.  It wasn't that bad!!!

I hope its easier than you're expecting it to be! Good luck!

  • I just thought of something else.

Have them rub their numbing agent crap (sorry can't think this late!) on your gums to help. They put it on with a q-tip.

  • I was and still am terrified of the dentist. I had an awful dentist do a root canal on me when I was 18 and he didnt believe me when I told him the Novocaine wasnt working. He told me I was wrong and kept drilling. The thought of the dentist makes me sick and I cry as soon as I see the chair. I finally found a dentist in my area that does sedation and he is great. It took a few appointments to get the dose right. I dont medicate well and have a very high tolerance for meds in general. He gave me an extremely high dose and I dont remember anything but I guess I punched him and fought when they tried to drill.  I lowered my dose to 8mg of Ativan 1 hour before and it was just enough to take the edge off but I was still aware enough to tell myself not to freak out and I am not in pain. It also made it hard to remember the appointment after the fact. I have now done all my fillings and even sat through another root canal with him. Please ask if they will give you meds or find a dentist that will. Good luck and I hope you get your dental work done.  Sorry this was so long.
