Expectant Mother Parking spot ... heated debate apparantly

I'm getting torn a new one over on the 3rd tri board for saying I don't use the spots and I feel like pregnant women should be walking anyway. Why park as close as you can just to walk 5 miles in the store.
SOooo many people got on me right away listing all the ailments they have in pregnancy and why they shouldn't be walking etc etc.
I am getting FLAMED big time!!
As if I care if they use it. If they have a legitimate reason to do so - go for it.

Sorry this became a hot subject! MH always tries to use them and I tell them I think they are dumb! I couldn't agree more that the majority of pregnant women need to be walking anyway!
If anything they should be new mother parking so women can be close when they have to haul an infant carrier into stores!
I saw that post. The OP said she had a 3 year old as well as being pregnant. I don't blame her. Personally, I get lots of BH if I walk around too much, so when I do park closer it is helpful. Also, I have a toddler that refuses the stroller, so the less I have to walk with her in the parking lot the better for me. I parked in one the other day, but it was raining and I had my almost 2 year old with me, so I was very glad it was open. If It was just me, I probably wouldn't have cared as much where I parked.
I think they're great for people who need them. Especially good in the winter climates, slippery parking lots, etc.. I have not felt the need to use one of these parking spots yet, but no judgment for those who have or need to. I've admittedly had a very pleasant pregnancy.
Perhaps the temptation will be greater after delivery. I have to admit the "parents with small children & strollers" parking spots are verrry tempting much of the time (well before pregnancy)
When most of us frequent 3rd tri as well as here, why would you start the debate all over again on a different board?

There aren't a lot of these coveted parking spaces where I live, however, occasionally I will find one. It depends on the circumstances if I park there or not... usually if I find one and I'm with both my boys then heck yeah I'm going to park there! The closer the better! But if I'm just by myself then I'll typically park elsewhere, just in the event that someone else will show up who REALLY needs it!
Not sure why/how this could turn into a heated debate!! Its just a parking spot!!
I have horrible sciatica. I wish every store had expectant mother parking.
But I agree to an extent. If you feel great, have no ailments, pass up the space.

I am excited in general when I get a close parking spot at the grocery store or something. I'm never really interested in having to park super far away, just to do MORE walking inside the actual store.
The day I realized I was "old" was when I was excited about getting that *perfect* parking spot at the grocery store -- closest to the doors, but right next to a cart return. It's just convenient, doesn't necessarily mean people are lazy.

I have used the spots since I found out I was PG and continue to use them now. It's a small perk for harboring another human being inside of my body for 9 months and for taking on the role as a mother.
I make no apologies. There are worse things to "take advantage of" in this world.
I will use it if the parking lot is full (our Babies R Us parking lot holds about 25 cars) other wise I agree with you!
Infact, I get such bad motion sickness when DH loops around a parking lot, I usually tell him to park in the back anyways, just so I can get out of the car!!!
If you have a real reason, then wouldn't your doctor try to get you a handicap sticker for all parking lots?

This is exactly how I feel. If someone has a legit issue, I am all for temporary handicap placards, that would be more helpful than non-enforceable expectant mother parking that people who are 4 weeks pregnant are more than welcome to use.
Exactly the way I see it. You don't have those spots at every place you go, so using an excuse like SPD seems pretty lame to me. Frankly, if you need to roll down your window to tell a guy to get out of the spot that you might just be lazy. Roll your eyes at the guy all you want, but telling him to move screams of entitlement to me. That's what rubbed me wrong about that OP.

Wow. I have SPD and also have a temporary disability parking sticker. Prior to that I definiely used the expectant mother's parking. We have then at 6 stores in my area and I chose to frequent those stores because of the spot due to the SPD. You would think this is lame and an excuse because you cannot possibly have SPD if you did you wouldn't be able to type something so crazy.
Everyone needs to lighten up. If you don't want to use the park don't use it walk from the ends of the earth to the store. If you want to use it don't feel like you need to justify it to anyone just use the damn thing who gives a sh!t what breezy or anyone else thinks.
I've had an ideal pregnancy (other than some bad m/s, and I didn't go anywhere then) and I've never used them. BUT, I would have if I'd known the Motherhood Maternity store had them. Its part of a HUGE mall, and I went on a Friday night. I parked in BFE just for a pair of pants. When I walked by them to get in the mall, there were several open spots.
The way you stated your original post on 3rd tri begged to be flamed. If you didn't care, you wouldn't have added the bit about being pregnant not hanicapped.
That said, if you've got some of the issues pp are talking about, you should look into a temporary hanicapped sticker. If it is that hard to walk (and with my little aches and pains, I believe it is for some people) then you should be parking in a close spot every time, not just when they've got the expectant mother spots.
Me too. And I've been on and off bedrest. I also get contractions when I walk really far that makes me stop in my tracks. I would rather stop in my tracks inside the store than in the parking lot where there are moving cars.
Four or five weeks ago I totally would have agreed with you but if there is a spot like that open then I use it now.

My thoughts? Using those parking spots are fine in general. That's what they're there for, aren't they?
That being said, I've never used them, and don't plan on using them assuming everything continues to go well.
I have your standard aches and pains due to pregnancy, but I'm the person that parks out in BFE so that my car doesn't get dinged up, so clearly parking in the front of the store is a non-issue for me. Plus, I don't mind the extra exercise.
I'm also not that ahole that circles the Target or Walmart parking lot for 15 minutes waiting for someone to leave in order to get the best parking spot. My healthy Mother has ALWAYS done that and it has always driven me batshit crazy that she goes that far out of her way to be that lazy.
The smug sense of superiority that can be gained by interweb validation? I don't know. I love people who do the whole "guh they were MEAN but YOU guys are totes smart enough to agree with me now let me bask in your praise!" thing
Oh also? OP. When I walk it feels like someone is ripping my vagina apart for fun, so I use the closer spots if I can. Cool story, bro? OHOHOH! When Cancer Dad is in my car I ALSO park in them because after chemo treatments he can totally be a little dodgy on the walking, but that's totally abusing the priv no?
I don't use them. But I'm currently still able to do 4-5 miles on the treadmill 5 days a week, so a walk in the parking lot certainly doesn't bother me.
However, there are plenty of people who are pregnant who are not physically capable of walking much (if at all). I think it's great that there is a space for those people.
It's important to remember being pregnant is not as comfortable and problem-free for one person as it is for the next.I'm going to be like you when I grow up!
I use them. I have SPD and have had lower back problems for years... only getting worse now.
HOWEVER, even if I didn't have these problems, I'd still use them. No one else does, so why shouldn't I?

Ive had an ideal pregnancy. However I have used the spots because I have knee problems which were starting to get better before I added all this extra weight. Now when i'm walking too much my knee gets tired and likes to try and give out making me almost fall. If DH is with me we don't use the spots only because he would be there to catch me if I were to fall.
That being said only CVS has them around me because the town I live in isn't really a young people town. My whole pregnancy i've seen maybe 2 other girls out and about in town that were pregnant. I don't even see pregnant girls everytime I go to my OB! So I think the spot at CVS is just for me! lol jk
I just went to BRU at lunchtime and specifically looked for that spot and took it, with this thread in mind -- and it was lovely!

Hahaha. Besides getting BH when I walk around too much, I have no issues with walking so I won't use the space if I see one because I'm sure there is someone who needs it more than I do. Sometimes though, when I'm at Blooms with my 3 year old DD I will use the "Parents with small children" space because it's right next to the cart return and it is way easier to get my DD in and out.
This. I always thought it made more since to have "family" parking. So that while getting young ones out and with strollers, they aren't banging into other cars in a narrow parking spot.
Where I live, the spots are both. Expectant mother and for those with small children. It's right on the signs. That being said, it's not everywhere. Malls, and Wal-Marts and the odd grocery store have them.
I have used them, when they are available, as we live in a very icy city in the winter and I actually have fallen and did quite the damage to my face and was lucky there wasn't any harm done to LO. I also have PSD and now have modified bedrest because walking causes contractions. If they aren't available, I just take the next closest spot though.
