When I had DS the lactation consultant suggested not to give him the pacifier.
With that said, are any of you going to introduce the pacifier?

Esma: I'll turn him into a flea. A harmless little flea. Then Ill put that flea in a box. And put that box inside another box. Mail that box to myself. And when it arrives. ILL SMASH IT WITH A HAMMER. Its brilliant, brilliant, brilliant I tell you. Genius I say.
Or to save on postage. Ill poison him with this.
Re: Are you going to introduce the pacifier?
Nope and people keep giving them to me.
So if you are, send me your address and I'll send you the 50 I have so far and I haven't even had my shower yet

Oh heck yes. My DS wouldn't take one (I seriously have every brand at home in a Ziploc baggie) and he used me as his pacifier until he found his thumb at about 6 months. That was rough! Now that he is a thumb sucker, we're finding that a hard habit to break. I think I'll start with the paci in the hospital this time to see if she takes it. I will be ecstatic if she does!!
yes! i have heard the opposite from my friends lactation consultant. she said it helps them jump start the suck mechanism.
but we will only be using it to "sooth" - not to go to sleep...to be relied on..etc.

At the hosptial!
I love binky babies! Flame away!!
But not all non-pacifier babies suck their thumbs.
I guess I just don't get the point of them. Is it basically just to keep them quiet since they supposedly are soothed by sucking random objects?

Babies have a NEED to suck. So it's either going to be you or the paci. I suggest the paci
ETA: I couldn't leave my house without my DS crying and freaking out. If he had taken a paci, I wouldn't have had that problem. I remember being in BRU, he was screaming, I had *just* fed him and he wasn't dirty/wet. I had to go into the bathroom just to let him suck for a few minutes and then he was totally fine. I so wished he would have taken the paci. Ugh.
Yes, we'll be using one as long as we find one that works!
Hm, interesting. Yep, I'm clueless. None of my family or friends have used them.

We tried- but DS never took one.
The nurse in the hospital basically said unless they are a preemie, or have latch/feeding issues, you can use the pacifier and not have to worry about potential nipple confusion. It never posed a problem for us- DS was NEVER confused as to which was the real-deal, LOL. He never wanted that fake silicone replacement! I literally tried probably 5 or 6 different brands and shapes, and he would never take one. He was always a boob-man, same thing even with bottles- eventually if he was hungry enough, he'd take some (from anyone other than me) but he always preferred the breast.
Yep, if he wants it he can have it. DS preferred the Soothie he got at the hospital but once we lost that one (actually I think the dog chewed it up) we had to keep getting the Soothie type binkies. He didn't use it much past 6 months though...
This is what I've heard too. I've also read that it reduces the risk of SIDS, so I will definitely be using one if she will take it, but I don't want to become dependent on it.
Definitely, but as needed. I don't have any hang ups about pacifiers as DD took hers with no problem and then when we got rid of it, it was over.
We'll see about the whole BF'ing and paci situation.

Self soothing at 2 weeks old?? Yeah, right.
Yes. But if she doesn't want it then I'm not going to force it. I'm also not going to keep trying. I'm also not going to freak out if she doesn't have it with her at all times.
I wanted to flame a girl I saw on 0-3 because her post was "1 month and FINALLY taking a paci." I'm sorry but why force your child to become dependent on a pacifier? That doesn't make sense to me.

You'll understand when you have a 1month old that needs to suck, but can't and freaks at every opportunity.
So true.

Yeah, good luck with that.
I get that. I've been a nanny to newborns and it sucks when there is nothing you can do to stop the crying and it goes on for hours. I do get that. I just don't want to force my child to become dependent on a pacifier when she doesn't want it/ has no interest in it. Even when crying for hours. I think its more detrimental in the long run when trying to wean at 3 because they HAVE to have it.
But if she wants it then I have no problem letting her have it.

I'm kind of indifferent here. We introduced a paci to Iris in the hospital. It never interfered with her ability to breastfeed. But she just didn't like it. She wanted to suck on me. So I let her and it was a rough first couple months. There were definitely times when I wished she would take a paci and there have been times when I'm glad she didn't learn to depend on them. So I guess I'm just going to play it by ear this time around.
It's different when you're the mother and you're the one taking care of them round the clock though. And when you have a baby who wants to spend literally hours sucking on your nipples day and night, it's rough.
This is the scenario that I'm talking about. If my baby has no interest then I'm not going to force it. Will it be harder on me? Yes. Will it be easier on me when they are 2 or 3 years old and I would have to deal with weaning? Yes.

No I am not planning on using a pacifier, and I didn't use one for DD either.
Or you wean them at 6 months to a year and don't struggle at all. I've had a few friends go that route and they had no issues at all getting their LO's to stop using it.
That would be fantastic but I feel the later you force it on them the harder that would be. I'm not a mom so you guys are probably right and I'm totally off. I just don't want to force the issue.
